making it more like facebook..........

making it more like facebook..........

Like I said, I have seen it on OTHER Christian forums, and I personally LIKE it.

Not everything that FB does is original to FB or bad for that matter.

Cool,....I'm fairly active on FB (see my FB link in my signature), at least I check in to see my wall, newsfeed and some discussion groups I belong to there. The chat, private message/video/photo share feature is cool, and I guess they are keeping up technology-wise too. As far any negatives, well....they have upped their security it seems, as some accounts have been hacked, etc....and they usually get to you pretty quick if they detect foul-play or someone logging into your account from a foreign location, etc. I almost got 'conned' by a swindler posing as my cousin,....I had to change my password and some other security measures, and I did just in the nick of time.

Not sure how much TOL here could adapt into a more FB-like format, as I don't know the template capabilities here, perhaps ask Knight about this. A personal private chat feature (beyond the group-chat on the home-page) could be cool, but don't know if that would cost any more or effect our subscription rates.

We've corresponded there :) - but you have to check regularly! I just never log out most of the time, and it seems to keep you as "
logged in" indefinitely, until you manually log-out. I also check out our TOL page there from time to time, especially when the main forum is down, to see any notices or updates.

I'm not kicking anyone.
Well, you wrote this about AB:
You were the victim of exclusion bullying as a child, weren't you. Conspiratorial AND envious...
Now you know that you don't have to be any of that to say something obvious and unfair went on and that it singularly benefited the group to which you belong. That's why I tried to move you and others off that sort of counter, noted it's like a rich kid making a joke about inequality. Even if you only benefited in the floating boats sense, at best it looks ungracious.

What's really absurd in all this is that anyone takes ultimately meaningless reputation on a website full of strangers so seriously.
I guess it depends on how you look at the word. Seriously enough to game the system as though it mattered? Or seriously in being disappointed by that? So I suppose it varies.

But all that is beside the point of it being Knight's site to operate as he wishes.
Sure is. I think I made that point a bit ago when I wondered aloud why all the soots members weren't automatically installed in the HOF. I mean, literally, why not?

I'd bet both of us know the answer to that, which is that unless you ultimately want a site consisting entirely of a small number of ideologically aligned people and a handful of oblivious crackpots you have to give those outside of the inner circle something they can claim fairly and squarely. That's something you protect, because sure it's pinball, but if you're putting a quarter in you still deserve an untilted surface.

So who is your/their complaint really with?
With whoever compromised the system, because it begins to seriously undermine the thing I was just talking about. And while the number isn't much to me, the joint here is and things that detract from it bother me, at least enough to note them.

I'll meet you halfway, though. Would it make you/them feel better if I deactivate my rep? I think I read that can be done.
I'd never ask or want you to, but I don't think you can do anything about turning off the number. I looked around and couldn't see the option a while ago, before any of this happened, when Knight (I think) was musing aloud about the possibility of doing away with rep. Like I said, just ride it out. Whoever gamed the thing has gotten the value that's left when that happens.

The old rep thing was dead. i seen two years those handing me reps. not one point was increased; I was maxed out. I gave to those who would gain a few points, although as lopsided it was, it seemed irrelevant.

Points are not redeemable, unlike those points in credit cards, i never used them even though they may have been worth something.

I use it for family and real friends ONLY. My last count was 72 and they take up enough time. Nobody is on my FB that I don't want, including one of my son's who always has a smart *** remark to make.

BTW, I'm not advocating a FB like format, just a like button.

True enough, but now it's like a zombie out looking for brains.

Right there with you. It was all liner notes. And you know what? I liked that.

Interesting. I stopped thinking about the points at all, just liked handing out encouraging notes and jokes and bits like that.

I think the only thing they ever really counted as was the foundation, cementing and acknowledgement of affection or respect or both.

Ah,..likes are cool :) - I have like 296 friends on my FB....but may downsize a bit,...as I see some posts that I may not like in my newsfeed/home page (where you see all the posts that everyone on your friends list contribute). I guess downsizing a bit to more just family and friends is good as a filter. However, my privacy settings are very open as I haven't clamped down too tight with personal info, so most anyone can contact me if they wanted (ph #, etc....but haven't had too many abuse that or stalk me yet).

Thanks for the reps everyone,...I try to return as able ;)

Is it true that those in this alleged SOOTS or TOOTS or whatever it is can secretly redeem their massive rep points for products out of the Knight's super-secret prize catalog? I'd really like a TOL oven mitt.

Let's reset everyone back to zero.
Eliminate poss rep completely, and only be able to give neg reps.
Let's see who gets the most red in the shortest period of time.
I'd rather zero, one point per rep, red or green. Let nature take its course and the devil the hindmost. :)

Or, better yet, one point green per rep and not neg at all. Just regard for a thing, let the contrarian impulse die on the vine.

Of course this is all within the realm of implausible science-fiction. :poly:

Seconded.

But then you'll have people complaining that they're not getting as many negs as others.
