A Gospel Imperative is operative to the called !
A Gospel Imperative is operative to the called !
Acts 16:31
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
The word believe here in the greek is πιστεύω:
I believe, have faith in, trust in; pass: I am entrusted with.
And here its an aorist imperative active ! The imperative mood means:
is a command or instruction given to the hearer, charging the hearer to carry out or perform a certain action. Which equals a work !
And by it being active, the subject is to do the action, or the work ! This really puts those who teach believing as an condition man does in order for God to save him, puts them in a bad position, because they are teaching and believing in salvation by works, no way around that conclusion ! However what I want to clarify about an Gospel Imperative, whenever its given to one for whom Christ died and its God's time for them to be converted, those Chosen to Salvation through Sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the Truth 2 Thess 2:13, the Imperative to believe is also operative, meaning it is exerting power and influence to bring about the result of believing, hence we have scripture Like Rom 1:16
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
16 for I am not ashamed of the good news of the Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation to every one who is believing, both to Jew first, and to Greek. YTL
If one is believing as the Gospel is delivered to them, that's indicative of it being the power of God causing that desired result !
To the called, as the Gospel goes out it is being applied by the Spirit unto Gospel Obedience 1 Pet 1:1:2
2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
Hence their believing the Light of the Gospel is commanded and operative , such like when God said "let there be Light" and there was Light, which is Paul's meaning here 2 Cor 4:6
6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
That's How we believe the Gospel with our Hearts, its the result of God's Power of Command saying Let there be Light in their Hearts, and so light is given and produces the desired result of the Imperative to Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ !
Notice how Paul in Vs 6 includes himself as one of the ones that God shined the Gospel in his Heart, which I believe refers to here Acts 9:3-6
3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
John writes to believers that they were commanded to believe on the Name of the Son of God 1 Jn 3:23
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
This Gospel command is operative to the sanctified Heb 10:10 and is not an asking, a pleading, a begging, it brings about the intended result, Just like this Mk 1:25-27
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.
And that's how an Gospel Imperative is stated ; again a definition of the imperative mood is:
The imperative mood corresponds to the English imperative, and expresses a command to the hearer to perform a certain action by the order and authority of the one commanding.
Believing the Gospel for the Spiritually Sanctified Elect is not an option for their freewill to decide upon, its by the Commanding Authority of God, obeyed by the one the command is issued to !
They obey just like those unclean spirits did in Mark 1:25-27 !
