This is one movie I have loved to have viewed had it not been for the casting of Russell Crowe.
Interesting. He's like DiCaprio for me. Can't stand anything I hear about the guy, but I can't fault them in film.

What bother's you about him?

Well, he got involved with a married woman whose husband was an ongoing adulterer, though few knew it at the time. She'd apparently had enough (though it took years and a few public scandals that came to light about her exhusband, including a lawsuit by a third party, if memory serves) and made a poor decision instead of divorcing the guy first.

It still doesn't speak highly of him and I don't know what his position on it would be now, but the moral conduct of much of Hollywood is a sad mess, comes to that. The Jimmy Stewarts of the world are few and far between, on or off the screen.

What movie does, "One O'clock Two O'clock, Three O'clock, Rock" remind you?
American Graffiti. :)

The Razors’ Edge
One of those you're going to love or hate. I'm in the love column...not as wild about the remake.

Red River was one of Wayne's best acting jobs, but The Searchers may be the best western ever.

To me it's The Searchers, Shane, High Noon, Once Upon a Time in the West in that conversation.

It was Peck in Duel, but Wayne was great in Red River.

Stage Coach was another in a string of terrific Wayne westerns...and Hondo. And I have a soft spot for Angel and the Badman (along with a crush on the star crossed costar). :)

The Big Country, with Peck and an unusual supporting role from Chuck Heston, is another really good western.

Heat of the Night
I like On the Waterfront and Jubal, with Rod Steiger as pinky:peach:
Never warmed to Brando, though he was great in any number of things, especially The Godfather.

Modern movies tend to the sensational and have sacrificed content you can sink your teeth into for immediate response (explosions and too many "twists"). It need not be old (or deep) for me to enjoy it, but too much film these days is intentionally "in your face". Some of my best loved movies:

Chariots of Fire
A Man for All Seasons (Paul Scofield version)
El Cid (I think I actually liked Heston better as him than Moses)
The Shop Around the Corner (beats Sleepless remakes hands down!)
Cromwell
Beckett (Long time since I saw this and Cromwell, so any specifics beside "...popish baubles..." are hazy)

For twists and turns :
Witness for the Prosecution (the original film with Laughton)
The Spanish Prisoner (quirky but enjoyable)
The Name of the Rose (a little gritty and even sensual in places, but good historical mystery)

The Big Heat with Glen Ford and Gloria Grahame, who was not a great film star, but I liked her pouty brat style; she had raw emotions, as in Crossfire, where she says, “What do you expect me to do, light up like a Christmas tree?”

Robert Ryan, in the movie and Act of Violence, was another forgotten exception he did well with Dangerous Ground and perhaps his best, The Racket.

Yes G. Peck and Joesph Cotton, with Lillian Gish and L. Barrymore.
Yes, Stagecoach was good, I liked when he played 'Cardell' in Tall in the Saddle, or do I have them mixed up?

Big County was good, Jean Simmons had range, seen in Angel Face and Elmer Gantry.

Who was just too sweet in Gone with the Wind and with Errol Flynn, yet was a monster in Hush Hush, Sweet Charlotte? Now that is acting range!

I have all these and I will go look.

Brando, i liked in that one and Streetcar, although I too did not think he was so great and Waterfront seems overrated to me.

Do you know what the "Network" generation is?

Witness for the Prosecution, yes I agree, very good with T. Power and, you know, Frenchy with the German accent, Marlene, Destry Rides Again ?

Wolf Creek 2:

What a piece of absolute crap. Once again masquerading under the banner of "based on real events", it's simply an excuse to up the ante on gore, violence and over the top effects to elevate the horrific killer of the first into some sort of almost 'heroic' stature along with cheesy "comic" one liners while he dispenses a brutal brand of killing. All of the menace and unsettling horror of the first is replaced with a trashy 'cashing in' as found with many sequels. Utterly unrealistic on a myriad levels with about the only positive aspect being the stunning scenery of the outback, something that actually aided the first one as it reflected the plight of those involved, not so in this...

Locke:

An ambitious film and far better than the above ^ if still a bit flawed IMO. It's basically a one man vehicle for Tom Hardy who pulls out a powerhouse of a performance as a man in a car, who for the duration of the film tries to sort a number of things out via phone while driving throughout. Due to a mistake he's made in his past, a number of personal events have to be addressed alongside an important business contract and the juxtaposition of his trying to handle both without unraveling does make for pretty riveting viewing at times. I'm just not sure it entirely works overall although the film is relatively short.
