The New Rep System Is A Joke

IF I had my preference, I would customize the rep system to allow our members to individually ban specific members from repping their account.

Rather, limit it to one per person per day and a total of 5 per day. So you can't rep the same person more than once a day and you can't make more than 5 reps per day. This will make sure that you rep only when really deserved. The idea of there being rep merry-go-round threads really is a joke. I know that I do like jokes and you will often find me making them but that one is not so funny because it devalues good posting practices.

OR ... we could allow people to decide who *they* believe deserves to be repped ... and completely leave off the option of neg repping.

What a novel idea!

I do wish there was a way on the user's end to utilize an ignore feature that would keep specific users for viewing, repping and replying to their posts, and profiles.

Ok, but you have to have selection. If you rep everyone then rep is meaningless. So limit the numbers.

Also, I would suggest a system which rewards good posts:

If you are the first person to rep a post, the post gets your rep power.
If you happen to be the second person to rep a post, the post gets an addition of your own rep plus 10%. If you are the third person to rep a post, the post gets your rep power plus 20% and so on. So a really good post will get more rep than an average post. This will only work if there is a much lower limit on the number of reps allowed.

Then, in addition, the repper will get a bonus rep for himself if he reps a post that has already been repped, equal to say 10% of of the rep that his rep gave to the post in question. This will encourage people only to rep good posts.

Sounds tricky, but it is serious. As I said, I am cheesed off with the system as it is.

The real problem with rep is the weighted nature of it. Take that out and it would be so hard to game the system that people would likely get tired of trying. One rep/one point and everyone is within shouting distance.

The problem for this is that the determination of what is a *good post* doesn't necessarily reflect the reality of an actual good post.

I would say that any post that includes name calling, lying and telling people to "burn in hell" is a bad post.

Never was.

Apparently it does.
Folks that I used to think of as friends are now accusing me of being underhanded because of my rep.

Now, if folks think my repping them is an unfair advantage, then I will just quit repping them.
Funny thing is, that some of those that think my repping them is an unfair advantage have not made a single effort to ask me to stop using "my unfair advantage" to rep them.
In their eyes, any rep I give anyone is an unfair advantage to them. So, anyone that has a rep from me already has a rep score that is unfair. Right?

You did nothing wrong Tam. You're one of the best posters around here.

no, you're fine - folks really got upset about going back to zero, so no matter who became #1 or top 10, would be scrutinized, complained about, analyzed, disputed and get downright hateful juvenile responses.

if you want to you can just rep me only, i'm ok with that. LOL -

I would like to disable my rep.
Previously, I thought of rep as a way of determining if I was communicating well with people. Plus I could use it as a way of establishing which other people were good or bad communicators and this would help me to decide who to respond to and who to not, so as not to waste my time. It isn't that I seek affirmation. It's whether or not I am making an impact. Towards the end of the last era I had a rep/post ratio of about 17 which was fairly above average and I was quite happy with that.
But, having established that I am an ok communicator, I no longer see the point in the system. Since the post numbers were not reset with the rep, I can't even establish a meaningful ratio. The problem is that when you go around giving 60 reps a day, regardless of whether it is to a specific group of people or friends, it devalues the meaning of rep. I no longer have confidence in the rep that I now have because it seems to no longer make any difference whether I post a good thoughtful post or just a one liner. And indeed it lowers my confidence that anyone is really interested in what I say, so long as they get some rep out of it. And that means that I won't post so often.

That's too bad. I will just say that even when you and I disagree, I enjoy your posts.

For my part, I wish we had MORE positive reps available ... because many on here deserve it just for being pleasant and reasonable.

When we were setting up a new church we asked our former Pastor what will be our biggest challenge? He said without hesitation... "the worship team and the music".

We all chuckled.

Yet... he was wise. The music selections, and the worship team were in fact the biggest challenge and gave us the most heartache of any issue in setting up the new church.

This rep thing reminds me of that. :chuckle:

It's been entertaining watching some of the members whinge over it.

As a relative newbie, I've got to ask, What's the big deal with reps?

Sounds like some people here are needy for affirmation that they are liked. Personally, I don't pay much attention to my rep rating, probably because I don't even know where to find it (where is it?), and when I did consider it I used Desert Reign's method of finding a post/rep ratio as a way to roughly gauge how I was doing with the board.

Maybe the best thing to do would be to scrap the whole rep system.

its a hoot......

Its an interesting system,....some play it differently than others, or do not rep you back when you rep them (not that they have to,..just an observation). We're reminded of a saying that Paul claims Jesus made - "its better to give than to receive" :) - but hey,....shoot as you will. - while among friends we do the 'give n take' game,....I often just rep people for fun, so I can rep back my comrades ....as u need to spread it around.

I was 'stunned' when Nick M pos repped me recently.....wow (that was a first in all my years here)...but it was just before the 'zeroing' out event here. I was involved in the old rep wars when we were helping some out who were being targeted by the heavy hitters (many being 'truth-smackers') getting them out of the 'red',...but that's history. - perhaps some modifications to the rep system can be made as suggested by others here, or some enhancement that all can enjoy, a versatility of sorts (and not just in the rep system,...other subscriber features).

Neg reps are for one 'disagreeing/disapproving' of a particular post,...while its not fun (or maybe nice) giving or receiving these, it would seem fair to keep this option open if its not 'abused', since honest criticism includes disagreements.

If its all a joke, just roll with the punches.....:surf:
