How do you know it was overstated? From the policy document it seems the motivation is to understand Islam.

It's much ado about nothing. Here's some perspective, minus the hysterics:

People concerned about reports that the San Diego Unified School District plans to teach students about Islam but not Christianity might be surprised if they saw some world history textbooks in classrooms.

Students in San Diego and throughout the state already are learning about Islam, as well as Christianity and other religions, and they have been for some time.

A school district in the Central Valley city of Modesto teaches Islam as part of a required world religion class that the California Legislature recognized as a model that should be followed.

The subject triggered an uproar in San Diego Unified after district Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement Stan Anjan discussed lessons about Islam as part of an anti-bullying campaign to protect Muslim students at a school board meeting in April.

Anjan said the plan is part of a district-wide campaign to address bullying of all students; other steps already have been taken to help students who are LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning), Native American, Latinos and immigrants.

“Our school district really is about ensuring that our schools are a safe space for learning,” Anjan said Friday. “This particular one is for Muslim students, but we have many other initiatives for a variety of other students and varying needs of their communities.”

In his April presentation, Anjan said a statewide survey found 55 percent of Muslim students had reported being bullied. San Diego Unified had seven cases, but Anjan said many more have come forward since his presentation last month.

Religions are studied as part of world history classes in several grades, but a state framework introduced in 2016 opens the door to expand on those lessons.

“It’s not just trying to teach from the textbook but also to use our resources,” Anjan said about the new framework. “It could be textbooks, media, current events or a variety of tools at our disposal to meet the outcome of the framework.”

All the lessons, he stressed, would be secular and not about the teaching of a faith.

I live in San Diego, along with about 100,000 Muslims. California is hugely diverse, with some of the largest populations in the country of many ethnic and religious minorities, and Islam has been presented here for many years along with other major religions in a historical context.

Anybody can use that excuse.

It's akin to showing pornography in order to teach sexuality.

The goal is to normalize islam and slander christianity in the history classes.

Schools have been threatened with lawsuits for a teacher explaining (only and historical context) what the biblical means of salvation is, with the teacher falsely accused of proselytizing and the administration falsely accused of approving it.

So, someone needs to sue a school that teaches the shahada, using the same precedent the Left always use: separation of church and state.

I would bet my next paycheck that the ACLU would refuse to take that case.
Proof please.

"But the teacher doesn't even believe it. They were simply stating it as a historical fact like any other," lawyers for the district would say.

"Doesn't matter," the ACLU would reply. "A student could still believe it when they hear it, and that amounts to a religion being preached in a public school."

It goes to the heart of a major fear of a certain segment of our society, that the destiny of the United States is not to be White, Protestant, and of European heritage.

And let's face it, Musty and CS are far from being MENSA candidates. They're that blinkered by their own bias and dogma they're incapable of approaching anything objectively. Far easier just to label people who aren't wayyyyy to the right wing as 'leftists'.

Answer Kiwi. The onus is on you to back up your claims so either address that, continue whining or go whinge to the mods.

:plain:
Anyone who has watched the news or watched threads on TOL, has already heard this story and others like it.
I thought Kiwi wasn't even from the U.S. so it is but of passing interest to him anyway.

The best way to stop bullying isn't by teaching about others. It actually has made it worse in some cases. The best way to combat bullying is to address bullies, not their victims. Most bullies are bullied at home and it really doesn't matter to them, who their scapegoat is. Public schools don't always do the bright thing. Schools are realizing teaching 'values' is a good thing, however. Anything from any group, that is a positive to the whole, should be taught. Anything that favors the left or right is simply indoctrination.

I'm not from the US either but Musty's claims have been shown to be suspect at least, and his reticence to address the above from Kiwi and anna only underscores that. It's hardly the first time he's pulled this type of stunt...

If it helps, without looking it up, I remember this. I think A4T was the one that brought up that thread from the news as well. -Lon
