I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO
In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript.

Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for.

This is an extraordinary film. I became familiar with James Baldwin about four years or so ago in my literature classes, where I read his fiction, but it was detached from his history. One of his works, a short story called Sonny's Blues, remains with me to this day - but I didn't know him in the context of his times, I didn't know about his friendships with Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Medgar Evers. It wasn't until I saw this film, rich with archival footage, much of which I've never seen, that all the pieces starting coming together.

Samuel L. Jackson narrates the film using Baldwin's words, and when I was sitting in that theater listening to Jackson channeling Baldwin, I thought of TOL and the threads celebrating whiteness as something superior - and the utter unwillingness to recognize that there is, and has always been, white privilege in this country. So I challenge the alt-right here, past or present, active or lurking, to see this movie and allow yourselves to challenge your assumptions.

In the words of James Baldwin:

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

I've been wanting to watching this film. I've known about Baldwin for a long time. YouTube had many of his speeches, television appearances, and debates. I've always found it interesting that he was friends with both Malcolm X and MLK since both men disliked each other.

Thinking of the white nationalism that seems to be so much more acceptable in the current political climate and seeing the Civil Rights-era signs being held I realized how far we haven't really come.

One sign said "race mixing is Communist." So I searched for that image to post it here - and found it on a Christian identity white supremacy site.

There's a great quote in the film about how Baldwin considered their different roles and his friendships with them, but it was too long for me to remember word for word and I haven't found an online citation yet, but I'll post it here if I find it. But he referenced all three saying he wasn't a Muslim, he wasn't a Black panther, and in church there were too many Christians who didn't practice the words of Jesus to love one another.

A country shouldn't make it a priority to mix and be multicultural. Liberals created this unnatural thing, which most of the world does not embrace, simply to demonize white people and decapitate their influence and culture.

The Founding Fathers said to bring in people from all around, sure.
But if you tired to impress on them this liberal mental illness, they'd shoot you with a musket :chuckle:

In the words of James Baldwin:

“Everybody's journey is individual. If you fall in love with a boy, you fall in love with a boy. The fact that many Americans consider it a disease says more about them than it does about homosexuality. ”

-James Baldwin

Why am I not surprised that you chose a pervert to promote your leftwing cause anna?

"While attending the predominantly Jewish DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, Baldwin joined a Communist youth group. Boyd reports that there is controversy about which one this was; unfortunately, he does not dig deeper. In No Name in the Street,11 Baldwin recounts that “At thirteen, I had been a convinced fellow traveler,” who marched in a May Day parade chanting “East Side, West Side all around the town, we want the landlords to tear the slums down.” As a teenager, he recalled adopting a “Trotskyite” identity and risking mortal injury for ridiculing the pro-Soviet wartime classic, Mission to Moscow, which humanized Joseph Stalin. Baldwin’s indignation – an emotion which is apt to reveal one’s most deeply held beliefs – was most strongly expressed against those “liberals” who did not protest “the execution of the Rosenbergs, the crucifixion of Alger Hiss, and the beatification of Whittaker Chambers,” all of which were fixations of Communists and their allies (29f)."

A country shouldn't enslave another people and allow them only 3/5 of their humanity.

which most of the world does not embrace, simply to demonize white people and decapitate their influence and culture.

Oh right... white influence has been decapitated... :chuckle:

Only in the minds of white nationalists and pill-popping MGOW.

If any white man in the world says, ‘Give me liberty or give me death,’ the entire white world applauds. When a black man says exactly the same thing, he is judged a criminal and treated like one and everything possible is done to make an example of this bad ****** so there won’t be any more like him.

A pervert (based on Baldwin's quote, perhaps a pedophile?) and a communist. I wanted to let people know who you are glamourizing.

Please continue.

Considering your history of demonizing civil rights leaders and your fixation of homosexuality, I'm not surprised to see you here. But you have your own thread for your pet topic so I suggest you continue there, because this thread is about civil rights, not about homosexuality.

Since you're the author of this thread, it appears that you want to set the ground rules.

1). I can't talk about James Baldwin's communism and his communist allies.
2). I can't talk about James Baldwin's open homosexuality (and possible acceptance of pedophilia).

Am I correct in my assumption anna?

No. I don't have any ground rules for the thread, only for myself.

I'm not going to waste time arguing with you about Baldwin's sexuality, so if you keep going in that direction I'll stop replying to your posts. Just so you know.

I know that you get sensitive when I talk about homosexuality and then make the tie to pedophilia and pederasty anna, so I won't talk about author James Baldwin's homosexuality and his quote that made it look like he enjoyed sex with little boys.

How about Baldwin's membership in communist and socialist groups and his close ties to known communists and communist sympathizers, can I talk about that?
