Russia has never had any democracy in the thousand years or so it has existed. It has always been controlled by kings, queens, czars, and dictators. Liberty has never been a part of it's past. So to expect the Russian people to think like the west is just plain ludicrous.
Russia could easily have become a thriving democracy were it not for Putin assuming dictatorial power.

I am getting tired of the tendency of disgruntled rightists claiming every democratic thing they oppose is Marxist propaganda and everything they support is God Bless American patriotism.
Let's just agree together that Marxism is opposed to America and capitalism.

Make no mistake. Marx was opposed to capitalism; opposed to private ownership of the means of production; opposed to wage labour; opposed to religion which he saw as a means of class rule; opposed to government, at least ultimately, and envisioned in a somewhat vague manner a withering away of the state.

Did Putin really say those things? Was he wrong? Have we proven the US was not involved in deadly research on foreign soil, as in China or in Ukraine? Or are we supposed to blindly accept what the conspiratorial unified leftist propagandist media tell us?
You don't actually have to listen to what cheerleaders say.

You can just watch the game.

So what are the odds that President Potato will inadvertently involve the US in a shooting War that goes nuclear and leads to Armageddon, nuclear winter, the end of the human race ...

I always suspected you are a closet atheist. That post proves it.

You know what Gorbachev's support is in Russia? He's tied with Yeltsin at 5%. The Russian people see both men as selling out Russian interests. Yeah, great chance of democracy.

Putin was a president before he became a dictator. He could have just remained a president, served a few terms with Russia's best interests in mind, and then passed the torch on to the next elected leader. He didn't. Instead, he chose to become the dictator of Russia for life.

Yes but Ffreeloader's point is that the Russian polity let that happen. It wasn't exactly democratic, but it wasn't exactly not democratic either.

I don't usually listen to Sean Hannity because I can't stand him but I thought this was worth sharing. Hannity is way more hawkish than I'm comfortable with, I wish more people would at least consider Tulsi's viewpoint. Yes I agree with Hannity that Putin has been reluctant to negotiate a ceasefire and a settlement, but I don't agree with him that the only arrow in our quiver at this point is a vigorous reminder of mutually assured destruction.

That's a fair point in the sense that Trump tried to pull the same thing here that Putin did in Russia, but we didn't allow Trump to get away with it.

"Putin has been reluctant to negotiate a ceasefire and a settlement," you say? And why not, I ask? I answer: Because Putin intended to become the dictator of Ukraine, just as he is now the dictator of Russia. To their credit, the people of Ukraine aren't having it.
