Trump was stupid if he thought he was going to pay off our national debt. He clearly did not count on democrats taking over the House and adding more than $6 trillion to the debt in just the last two years of his administration.
Trump was lying to get votes when he promised to submit a plan to pay off the national debt in 8 years and then never even submitted any such plan for consideration as president, but did continue to drive up deficits and debt even during his first 2 years in office when Republicans controlled Congress.
Unfortunately, most candidates lie to get votes. The debt did rise the first two years under Trump with republicans controlling the House and then rose 3 times as much in the last two years with democrats controlling the House and government spending.
And Trump stood idly by and did nothing about it.
Trump's deficits, even during his first 2 years when Republicans controlled Congress, were record-high deficits for a good economy. When Qovid hit, Trump supported the very expensive measures required to shut down the economy.
Republicans, since 1960, have almost if not always outspent democrats when in office.
Dummies squawk about the marshmallow fires in the yard, representing deficits, while knowing nothing about the house on fire from the debt.
But republicans keep trying to preserve the debt ceiling while democrats never do that.
Most of which was accumulated by Republicans.
You obviously have no clue about what "preserve the debt ceiling" even means. It means that we would default on our debt, instead of servicing the debt for borrowed money that we've already spent. Are you trying to start another Great Depression?
The problem is that they're not trying to ELIMINATE the debt, but rather "maintain the status quo."
When it comes to debt, you're either sinking along with the ship, (treading water inside a sinking ship is still sinking), or you're swimming to safety (ie, reducing it). You HAVE to be proactive in paying it off, or it will continue to rise. "Preserving the debt ceiling" (whatever that even means), is definitely not "swimming to shore."
Unwise supporters of the left will always blame others for problems the left has been primarily responsible for. If democrats were fiscal conservatives then they would not have been fighting republicans every few years because republicans would not let them raise the debt ceiling.

The Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in the 2010 elections touched off a series of budgetary battles between the White House and congressional Republicans that would rage on for the rest President Obama’s presidency. Democrats claim we must remove the debt ceiling in order to pay our bulging debt, and democrats oppose cuts in spending and cuts in taxes. I tend to agree that the US can no longer operate in the black because our debt has become so great we must keep borrowing more and more money just to service it while never paying it down.
Americans for Prosperity Action, which was founded by conservative billionaires Charles Koch and his late brother David Koch, held a confab in California after stating it was time for the Republican Party to "turn the page" on the Trump years.
The Koch brother-aligned group has made it clear it will oppose Donald Trump's third attempt to run for president in 2024 because it believes it is time to move on after his attempt to steal the 2020 election.
A statement from AFP Action claimed, “The Republican Party is nominating bad candidates who are advocating for things that go against core American principles," before adding, "So the best thing for the country would be to have a president in 2025 who represents a new chapter. The American people have shown that they’re ready to move on, and so AFP will help them do that.”

At least the group is looking for candidates who will support traditional American values, not leftists with an addiction to one-world depravity and fascist control.
I didn't support Trump in the 2016 primary. That is because good Americans vote for the candidate of their choice, not for candidates chosen by some party they have a swirling-eyed allegiance to.
