My initial reaction is not a positive one but I suppose I'd need to see what, specifically, they are regulating before I make a decision.

Take the topic above and run with it! Slice it, dice it, give us your general thoughts about it. Everyday there will be a new TOL Topic of the Day.
If you want to make suggestions for the Topic of the Day send a Tweet to @toldailytopic or @theologyonline or send it to us via Facebook.

This is another of those topics on which I am conflicted. On the one hand I favor the least possible government intervention in the affairs of citizens. On the other hand I wish to protect the vulnerable from parasites and vultures who wish to prey on them.
I'm not very computer savvy so I'd like to be protected from those who know how to slip putrid material into my space and it becomes my responsiblity AFTER it shows up to attempt to regulate it.
So, I'd favor some kind of rating system which allows me to say "deny access to my accounts by any posters who are pushing putridness!".
Absolutely no child pornography should be allowed anywhere!

I wouldn't be opposed to rules about access to service, what public ISPs are allowed to do in terms of filtering or throttling and how service is marketed, safe harbor provisions for various situations, rules protecting the infrastructure of the network, rules protecting intellectual property. That's what I can think of off the top of my head after five minutes of thinking.

The government shouldn't be in the business of regulating content.

I am in favor of net neutrality so I think that's one area I would support government regulation if that is needed.

I don't like finding stuff I'm not actually searching for. I think some regulations on what tags must be present and what tags are not allowed, and some code to insure that I won't come across something I don't want [i.e. you have to type in an exact set of keywords to get certain things] would be nice, since they seem intent on keeping a lot of that stuff legal.

I'm not sure if you're serious or my sarcasm detector is broken.

One must differentiate between "net neutrality" and the current issue in the UN.* Net neutrality is about freedom of speech and freedom of access. All it says is that international corporations and internet providers cannot censure what you access. The U.N thing is something totally different and I would say evil.

It is called "net neutrality" because it means that internet providers must remain neutral. They cannot favor one site over another. For example, without net neutrality if my internet provider has ads on another chess site they can simply deny me access to yahoo chess ( my favorite). With net neutrality they are forbidden from doing that.
Net neutrality is about regulations. REGULATION ON THE INTERNATIONAL CORPORATIONS, preventing them from denying me free access to the internet and any site I wish to visit.

I'm serious. I don't like when I look for images for my TOL avatars and find porn. Especially when it's porn that disgusts me.

What kind of things do you search for? I never have that problem when I search for avatars.

I don't recall the specific (but innocent) searches I've done in google images that come up with questionable results. Some pretty random stuff pops up every so often though.

Do yourself a favor and never search for "legal briefs"...:nono:

Lighthouse has a point here.

There needs to be some regulation to control illegal content, dishonesty and pornography.

Illegal content--spam averts, Viruses and criminal activity and scams. This includes dishonesty and sucker schemes.

Regulating porn--Confining it to just the .xxx domain and fining people that post it elsewhere. That would solve the problem of keeping out of searches for people that don't want to find it.

Wikipedia has gotten too visually graphic on their medical articles lately that relate to reproductive issues. There needs to be regulation on what images are acceptable on sites like this.

Search engines like Google have filter settings. They aren't perfect, but that's a technical limitation. If they could do better, they would.

Bad idea. The minions of government will seek to increase their power and control. It matters not the excuses, deceptions, and fraud used to do so.

Censorship is never good. If one doesn't wish to see, read or hear something, don't go there. Years of expecting government to take over our personal responsibilities has created the mess we are in.
