The Gospel Of Thomas

Is it lengthy book?

I am so used to reading the 4 gospels. And they have so many similarity.

No, it is only His sayings and teachings, not the story's and histories, very early Christian writings before the canon.

Paul

Paul

Please forgive me for butting in.

I have a simple question.

Did author know or say anything about Paul?

thank you.

As far as I know there is nothing about Paul in the GOT, or any saying of Pauls or Paul's reference to any teaching of Jesus, although there is a verse that Paul mentions that the GOT attributes to Jesus (GOT saying 17) -

17. Yeshua says: I shall give to you what eye has not seen and what ear has not heard and what hand has not touched and what has not arisen in the mind of mankind.

This cross-references 1 Cor. 2:9/ Isaiah 64:4

However, as it is written: "What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived" -- the things God has prepared for those who love him--

- 1 Cor. 2:9 NIV

For since the beginning of the world
Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear,
Nor has the eye seen any God besides You,
Who acts for the one who waits for Him.

- Is. 64:4 NKJV

Paul only mentions this being a written passage (probably alluding to Isaiah)....but elsewhere Paul hardly quotes anything the Lord Jesus said recorded in the gospels, except a vague mention of the Lord saying "it is better to give than to receive", and the 'Eucharist' ritual (The Lord's Supper memorial) which may have originated with Paul himself, and later interpolated into the gospels (that's another subject). Beyond this, whether Paul was aware of an extant record of sayings of Jesus (in any form) or gospel accounts we don't know since he focused on his own 'gospel-revelation', - the synoptics and gospel of John came to be at a later date.

So I have noticed, that's why I don't like Paul's teachings too much. I pay attention to what Jesus actually said.

Why GOT is called gnostic? It does not sound good.

I would rather have a book instead of reading on the internet. Is it available or have to read on the internet?

Why is it called gnostic?

You'll find the answer in the link-articles we gave you. It was found among the Nag hammadi library, within a collection of Gnostic writings, - it has common gnostic themes (emphasis on 'gnosis' (knowledge) as the key to salvation), but some of the sayings are not necessarily 'gnostic' in nature, as they are variations of the sayings of Jesus found in the synoptics.

The Gnostic World-View - A Brief Summary

If you wont take advantage of the FREE information, commentary and resource links, not sure we can help much more, as we've been discussing GOT thru-out the thread. You need to learn to do your OWN research, and read the GOT online. You can go to Amazon.com and 'search' for the GOT, and find many versions, if you want to buy an actual physical book, or your local bookstore.

You can also buy an e-book (internet tablet), like a Kindle Fire HD, or Nook,...they are awesome! I have a Kindle Fire HD. - its a portable library to take wherever you go with Wi-Fi access. Its good to keep up with the times, for your own benefit.

Get with it sis.

So, you are wealthy enough to buy a book you don't need (it's free). Doesn't that make you a hypocrite? Don't you still think you should give your excess wealth to others?

Are you still drinking coffee too?

Saying 32

Saying 32

(32) Jesus said, "A city being built on a high mountain and fortified cannot fall, nor can it be hidden."

We have just see an example of what this verse is talking about. Meshak has made a name for herself here on TOL and now she can't hide her hypocrisy anywhere.

Thanks for you're participation, meshak, you came in right on time.

Which apostles did Paul actually meet?

Which apostles did Paul actually meet?

Thomas never met or knew Paul.

Interesting question is which original apostles did Paul actually know and meet? His main interactions appear to be with Peter, James and John, but not sure if he got to meet all 12 original apostles, - would have to research Acts and the epistles on which actual 'interactions' are recorded; we also have to consider that not all 'meetings' may have been recorded. Also, the book of Acts could have went thru some 'doctoring' or have already been predisposed to show Paul in a good light, especially if the writer had Pauline sentiments, which Acts caters towards, as some of his own epistles tell a different story of sorts, so that not all lines up. In any case, we can also question if the GOT was an actual collection of sayings recorded/kept by Thomas himself, or just attributed to him for whatever reason or tradition's sake.

While Paul claims that Peter, James and John (the pillars of the Jerusalem Community) gave him the right hand of fellowship, 'sanctioning' his gospel to be given to the Gentiles, do we have any verifiable evidence or writing from these individuals themselves further confirming Paul's ministry credentials? 2nd Peter is questionable as a 'support' for Paul, since its 'pseudographical' (not written by Peter himself), but each must weigh the evidence or lack thereof for themselves.

(33) Jesus said: What you hear with your ear (and) with the other ear, proclaim it on your roof-tops. For no one lights a lamp to set it under a bushel, or to put it in a hidden place; but he sets it on the lamp-stand, that all who go in and come out may see its light.

Please forgive me for going backward, I just started read GOT and this is very interesting:

12. The disciples said to Jesus, "We know that you are going to leave us. Who will be our leader?"

Jesus said to them, "No matter where you are you are to go to James the Just, for whose sake heaven and earth came into being."

Jesus did not say go to Paul. James preaches plainly to do good works. He says faith without deeds is dead.

thank you.
