How free should free speech be?

How free should free speech be?

Hey everyone, post your comment for us all to talk about on how free you think free speech should be. Be respectful, do not attack other people, if you are unable to comply to this do not post on this thread.
The First Amendment to the United State's Constitution:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The Constitution acknowledge's the already existing freedom of speech (it does not establish or create it), and the Supreme Court is the authoritative interpreter of what that freedom of speech is.

I'd imagine that somebody somewhere has listed all the Supreme Court decision's that further develop and clarify exactly what the freedom of speech is. This is basically the answer to you're question.

The oft paraphrased Holmes quote is essentially saying that the 1st Amendment doesn't protect using speech to harm others with a known falsehood, to in essence advance criminal activity. Outside of that we are free to speak our minds.
Yes but we must not write about trins. :)

Different goalposts. You have the right here to follow the rules or start your own site. :)
Surely saying non-trins do this or that is not disruptive. By way of there is an active thread about trinity belief. Are you saying many in that thread should receive infractions?

Don't yell "Fire" if there isn't one, and don't yell "Help" if you don't need it. :)

Granted, but what about in a corrupt government that says you can't talk about Jesus or against the government ever? Do you really want big government telling you what you can and cannot say?

In that case, we obey God rather than man. :)

People get the government they deserve. If they are cowards, they will be ruled by bullies. If they're greedy, they'll be ruled by the rich. If they're bigots they'll be ruled by fascists. And if they're selfish and dishonest by nature, they will be ruled by criminals.

Our governments are direct reflections of ourselves.

If we want better government, first we have to know what it looks like, and then we have to fight to bring it about. And fight all the more to keep it once we get it.

If the ungodly idiots outnumber us, we're where we find ourselves today. :chuckle:

Not always the case, in fact free speech exists to protect that which you may find harmful, inciting, & provocative.

Yep. The first amendment exists to protect unpopular political speech. The majority view does not need protecting.

Surely it's about context and habit. Hers is to use any pretext to attack orthodoxy. She can have her heresy, advanced and rebutted, but she can't hijack any thread with it just because she wants to.

Why not? You hijack any thread that suits your fancy just because you want to. What makes you special?

None of that's true, so addressing the particulars is a waste of time and it was unresponsive (no surprise there) on the points I raised

Meshak's problem is that she can't be satisfied, apparently, until she's turned any excuse into an attack on the trinity, itself heretical, and the people who believe in it. Which would be the overwhelming majority of Christendom. That's not being aware of where you are or not being reasonably restrained in how you address where you are.

It's not a crime to joke about bombs at an airport. It is profoundly stupid, since the TSA is trained to look for any sort of thing that might conceivably be related to a bomb.

A student with a LED jacket was tackled by a couple of security people, and hauled away because some ditz at a gate thought it must be a bomb. And even after they found that it was completely harmless and not in any way intended to look like a bomb, they wanted to pursue felony charges against her.

Star was an intern at Squid Labs this summer, and is an all-around awesome geek who loves to build things. FYI, friends at MIT say she wears the hoodie on a regular basis- it's just unfortunate that she had it on while trying to pick a friend up at the airport. MIT students don't really do mornings, or worry about what they're wearing, so I can't imagine she'd even think about her clothes before heading out to pick up a friend at the airport before 8am.

When Star gets out we'll have her do an Instructable on

1) how to get arrested at the airport without being shot, and

2) how to package your homemade electronics to look purchased.

Maybe BB and Instructables should start handing out some official-looking stickers and plastic covers to make breadboards look more commercial -- it will keep our readers away from automatic weapons.

Far as I can see, police pushed charges because they didn't want to look stupid for arresting her in the first place.

Never underestimate the stupidity of TSA agents.
