YouTube censorship

Oh my...the "impact" on a five year old boy. :jawdrop: Do you keep him secluded in his room?

I don't know who you're trying to fool, but I have no doubt there have been some "bad" words coming out of your own mouth...if nothing else, your example of thinking you're better than everyone else is something I'd be pointing out to my grandkids as a thing God hates.

One thing I do know about little boys is that they will repeat whatever they hear from wherever they hear it. Then daddy is supposed to have a talk with them. That's called parenting. You'd better start now because we live in a world of sin, and a world inundated with profanity. Suck it up buttercup and do your job.

"Impact on a 5 yr. old boy". :rotfl:
Acting like your better than everyone else is definitely a bad image to show a son.

I'd say censorship is usually the wrong way to go. I believe that better ideas will always trump their competition. Absent profanity or pornography, the public square is lessened by actions that diminish the public's access to competing ideas.

And thanks for linking to this, because my son heard that one drop.

maybe the solution is to realize that a lot of what goes on here at TOL isn't appropriate for a five year old, like jeff's avatar and most of the images in acw's thread

It's not the public square. YouTube is a private company that has the right to deny a platform as it sees fit.

The problem is the alleged fraud.

Did you miss the legal aspect of the video? It was the main point.

Which is why the left censors information.
I think your net is half full. The extremes tend to censor, left or right, from language to conduct and along the lines of what they believe should compel us.

Sure. And I can see that coming and make sure he isn't exposed to it.

What I didn't foresee was a Christian linking me to a video where that language was being used. Why? For one reason it's against the rules we agree to when we sign on here. For another, I thought Tam would be the sort to abide by them, would never have thought what she did was possible for her. See, I can think someone has flaws in their thinking without that necessarily being a judgement of their character. I was almost as shocked by the realization she'd done it as by the word itself. I was doubly shocked with her response to the criticism. Not the personal part, but the lack of responsibility or addressing it.

In her shoes I'd have been embarrassed, apologized, and removed the link.

ok, to refresh - your son looked over your shoulder and saw a youtube video in which the fellow used the F-word
No. He was playing in another part of the room and heard the word.

what impact do you think this will have on a five year old boy?
It underscores something I've taught him, that some people make poor choices about the words they use and that this fellow made an evil one. We had a conversation about it. And I know that in the course of his life he'll hear worse. But I hope not at five and it wasn't something he should have been exposed to via this site.

I know. I was making a broader comment. They make their money trading on the impression that they're a fairly open public forum.

I stopped watching videos put up around here a day ago when an F bomb was in a link made by a site member and Christian, if you can believe it. If you'll vouch I won't run into anything unfit for the site in terms of language I'll be happy to give it a look. Our differences aside, I'd take your word for it.

Otherwise, if it comes up on my legal radar I'll probably address it in my thread on the subject. I was noting the comments about censorship and limited my contribution to that point at present.

It's not even outrage, and your 'reasoning' is simple at best.

There's no place for profanity laden videos on a family oriented site. If you can't get that then you either don't care or are just playing to some peanut gallery in your head.
But who really brings their family to TOL?

I like the word when used in humor or at least for a chuckle or at any rate when uttered/written while in a good mood, or to lighten the mood.

When it's used angry it's an attempt to offend at worst, and to perhaps brazenly elicit compassion to the user's plight at best.

I don't think the word's evil in and of itself, but that's just like all other opinions.

P.S. I don't use it around my or anyone else's kids, and I keep kids from hearing it also, just for the (more complete) record.

I think that's the way most folks view it.
It can be used in an aggressive and insulting or non-aggressive non-insulting way.
You can do the same with the word "dog".
