We see at Creation were God took time to take time to rest, as we read that on the seventh day he rested from all his work after the making of the heaven and earth was completed. God gave man the gift of rest, a day to cease from working and to honor Him, setting apart the seventh day to keep it holy. The word “Sabbath” is related to a Hebrew root that means “cease” or “stop.” God commanded His people to cease from their labor, so they could rest, refresh, and refuel.
Most believers would agree that today God also desires to give his children that same gift of rest, and Christians should observe the Sabbath, as a day to honor God. There’s no biblical basis for changing it from the seventh day to any other day. Since God made it at Creation and included the Sabbath in the 10 Commandments, He must have thought it was important.
Of course we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, not by works. However, as people who want to honor and obey God, we accept these 10 commands as how God wants us to live. For example, we refrain from bowing down to idols, killing, stealing, sleeping with another’s spouse, or bearing false witness against our neighbor.
So it stands to reason we should also honor the 4th commandment to remember the Sabbath. Inside this commandment itself we find two compelling reasons:
The first part of the 4th commandment in tells us to keep it “holy,” which means “dedicated to God.” We also read in verse 11, “The Lord blessed the Sabbath and made it holy.” When we make an effort to set aside time each week to meet with other fellow believers to worship God and hear His Word, it honors Him. Ezekiel 22:26 Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
Ezekiel 23:38 Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.
The Lord claims the sabbath as His very own. It is a day, therefore it is literally, the Lord's day. This is clear, so how many times must the Lord call the sabbath His day to understand that there is only one day in the scriptures that would be referred to as the Lord's day? Other than the seventh day sabbath, the Lord's day can also refer to the day on which He will return to this earth. That is all. Sunday, or the first day of the week is never referred to as the Lord's day in the scriptures.
This title was only applied to Sunday later on, to cover their deception. It was applied by those who began the apostasy and abomination which was the result of the amalgamation of apostate Christianity and pagan sun worship.
