Not to get off topic. Here is quote about death and dying from D. L. Moody.

Dwight L. Moody
1837-1899
American evangelist

"Some day you will read in the papers that D.L. Moody of East Northfield, is dead. Don't you believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now; I shall have gone up higher, that is all, out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal - a body that death cannot touch, that sin cannot taint; a body fashioned like unto His glorious body."

"I was born of the flesh in 1837. I was born of the Spirit in 1856. That which is born of the flesh may die. That which is born of the Spirit will live forever."

Or D.L. is just dead.

Hard to prove, one way or another.

Yes dead is dead. I know from the prespective as a retired but part time funeral director.

Moody had hope as others do today, myself included.

Back to the hymns . . . And I'll continue to help the living by caring for their dead.

This is poem by Alfred Tennyson that had been set to music and sang/played at funerals years ago, and it seems long now forgotten.

CROSSING THE BAR
By Alfred Tennyson

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam.
When that which drew from the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark.

For, though from out our bourne of time and place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it, but I would like to have "Go Rest High on that Mountain", by Vince Gill.

That is a good choice.

"Go Rest High on that Mountain" was played at a number of services as closing music, and a few times as a solo, at services I officiated or was the attending funeral director.

As I said on another board - I want a chorus line of midgets singing "Ding! Dong! The Witch is Dead!" From Wizard of Oz.

If there are no midgets I will get up out of my grave and kill everyone.

Near, my God to Thee

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to thee!

There let the way appear, steps unto Heav’n;
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee!

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.
Near, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee!

Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I’ll fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.
Near, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee!

There in my Father’s home, safe and at rest,
There in my Savior’s love, perfectly blest;
Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee!

A lot of families have asked for this song for their infants and children.

Safe in the Arms of Jesus

Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast,
There by His love o’ershaded, sweetly my soul shall rest.
Hark! ’tis the voice of angels, borne in a song to me.
Over the fields of glory, over the jasper sea.

Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe from corroding care,
Safe from the world’s temptations, sin cannot harm me there.
Free from the blight of sorrow, free from my doubts and fears;
Only a few more trials, only a few more tears!

Jesus, my heart’s dear Refuge, Jesus has died for me;
Firm on the Rock of Ages, ever my trust shall be.
Here let me wait with patience, wait till the night is over;
Wait till I see the morning break on the golden shore.

Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast
There by His love o’ershaded, sweetly my soul shall rest.

Several at the retirement/healthcare center would like a soloist to sing "After" at their funeral/memorial service.

After

After the toil and the heat of the day,
After my troubles are past,
After the sorrows are taken away,
I shall see Jesus at last.

After the heartaches and sighing shall cease,
After the cold winter's blast,
After the conflict comes glorious peace:
I shall see Jesus at last.

After the shadows of evening shall fall,
After my anchor is cast.
After I list to my glorious peace,
I shall see Jesus at last.

He will be waiting for me, Jesus, so kind and true.
On His beautiful throne
He will welcome me home
After the Day is through.

This old hymn was sang a my brother's funeral service by a quartet. It has a good message.

I Won’t Have To Cross Jordan Alone

When I come to the river at ending of day
And the last winds of sorrow have blown
There’ll be somebody waiting to show me the way
And I won’t have to cross Jordan alone

Though the billows of sorrow and troubles may sweep
Christ the Savior will care for His own
Till the end of my journey my soul He will keep
And I won’t have to cross Jordan alone

I won’t have to cross Jordan alone
Jesus died for my sins to atone
When in darkness I see, He’ll be waiting for me
And I won’t have to cross Jordan alone

No . . . I won’t have to cross Jordan alone

p.s. I don't know what song I'd want played at my funeral, but I would want Tony Funderburk to sing it!

I can remember "How Great Thou Art" played at both of my grandfathers funerals and I knew right then that I would want that played at my funeral as well. That song has always been a favorite of mine.
