Uh, that was before He went to the cross. The Risen Lord informed us that He is the end of the Law for righteousness. Which simply means that righteousness comes from FAITH no in obedience to laws.

Are you telling me that you believe that "the cross" exempts you from all of the things that Jesus taught even during his life? Why do you suppose he spent so much time teaching if that was the plan. You'd think maybe he'd throw in a caveat about that, or something. Like "forget all this compassion in three years, it won't apply anymore."

As for why an atheist might appeal to the authority of the Bible of Jesus, the reason is simple. It's not a moral authority, to me, although it is in this case morally persuasive. But it is an authority on Christianity.

What man would strive to do to please God before the cross, could not be accomplished perfectly enough by man's efforts alone. God's plan from the beginning was man with the Holy Spirit dwelling in Him. When we are saved, we are able to rest and allow the Spirit to do His work through us. We just need to trust Him to do what we can never do. Oh, sure, we can work hard to do good, but our own pride and ego will inevitably take over. This way, God gets all the glory...not man.

That's exactly the point.

One element of hypocrisy is judging others by a standard you have no intention of applying to yourself, and indeed don't even believe is valid. In pointing out the perceived hypocrisy of believers, even if accurately, he shows himself an even bigger hypocrite for daring to use a standard he believes is beneath him.
