toldailytopic: Reliability of God's word: Some make the claim that the Bible is unreliable because it has been translated so many times. Fair claim?

I don't think it's a fair claim. A fair claim would be that some translations of some parts of some manuscripts are flawed.

Some say the Bible is the literal Word of God. Some say it is the inspired Word of God. Some say it is the words of thousands of theologians with their own private agendas. These three concepts seem to be exclusionary of each other. I don't think they are. I think it is all three simultaneously. With man some things are impossible but nothing is impossible for God.

There never has been a book so scrupulessly and meticulessly scrutinized for accuracy by believers and unbelievers alike.

But you have to watch out for new translations even NIV because they tend to translate what their theology thinks it says.

I think the agragate of manuscripts extant more than attest to the reliability of scripture as it has come down to us. In fact, there is no doccument of the ancient world that can even compare with the manuscript evidence of scripture.

Nope, people making that are making claims based on agenda and have little knowledgeable of the facts of the matter.

If each and every translation had been made from a previous translation, then that might be true. But that is simply not the case.

The reason WHY we have over 30,000 Christian denominations based on the Bible is NOT because of manuscript issues. The reason is because one can take a single verse and get 10+ different meanings out of it.

Reliability is not the problem. This forum and 99% of its theological debates are not because of manuscript issues. The debates are over the interpretation/understanding of those verses and the Bible as a whole.

I think you are right and wrong at the same time. For example, godrulz knows what dead to sin means. But he chooses to pervert it.

The Scriptures only say things one way one thing at a time for all time by many different writers of the same things in their own words. None ever “contradicts” with any other. They’re just in different words in their own words. ---- Why are the news papers taken so strictly and the Bible so differently?? – Yes, it’s different scholarly readers, and their different wants and agendas. The world of religion doesn’t care what God said, if it doesn’t fit their own foolish minds. --- The news papers are either agreed on or not, never changing the meaning of anything. -- The same with any novel, folks just take it as is; - but Not the Bible!! - Very, very smart. --- ( Acts 2:38 KJV ).

Paul – 091912

It seems that interpretation of the Bible will always contain differing perspectives too.
There are Truthes in the Bible and there is inspiration by the Holy Spirit at work in each of us as we are capable of understanding.
Bible study is so important as well as commentaries. I learn so much from seeing and hearing the wisdom of others.
