My apologies. When I consider modern day prophets, that's what usually comes to mind. I believe that many folks claiming religious prophecy do a lot of damage.

That aside...

I'd say a prophet is someone who has been inspired directly by God (or the supernatural) with information, and their role is to deliver that information. That could be to an individual (as in your case, the information was specific to you), but it can pertain to mankind as well.

Generally, I think we consider a prophet as foretelling future events.
