You cannot reject the "Historical Gospel" of Jesus Christ and be saved.
We are saved by simple faith in the doing and the dying of Jesus, plus nothing. If you add anything to the Gospel you have perverted it.

Jesus came preaching the coming/present Kingdom of God. What came instead was the church.
In Paul's day, the early believers held all things in common and were decidedly nonviolent. Engels and Lenin praised their early society and culture. When the church was co-opted by the Roman Empire, the religion changed into a bureaucratic salvation machine with a God more like a divine vending machine than a unknowable, sacred reality.

Sounds like the Roman Catholic church.
The Catholic church was the only thing available until Martin Luther's 95 theses were nailed to the church door.
There were some that believed in the Gospel and justification by faith, but they didn't last very long.
Those forgotten traditions are still carried on by many who are Christians. There are even many on this very website.
The reason Christianity is so diverse is that the New Testament contains remembered history, oral traditions, diverse theologies, metaphor, myth and legends. It's a scattershot as to finding a dominant voice from all of the inspired writings.
In fact, looking around us, it really cannot be done.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ can easily be found in the scriptures. Unfortunately, many prefer to believe what they want.

There is the gospel of Jesus (his parabolic speech about the Kingdom of God) and then there is the gospel of Christ (what Jesus became to the church after he died).
I believe that God is revealed in the person of Jesus. To me, that's Christianity.
Instead of requiring "true" believers to give their assent to a list of ancient, outmoded beliefs from ancient times, we need to realize that a follower of Jesus needs to pick up their cross and follow him.
Anyone, anywhere, anytime can claim belief in theology like "born of a virgin," "Savior of the World," etc. It's no moral skin off anyone's nose to do that.
