The Natural Man and the Gospel

by Wylie W. Fulton
No natural sinner can savingly repent or believe. It was the invention of Andrew Fuller and others, in the early “missionary movement” among Baptists—they said that the natural man has a duty to perform spiritual acts, and so they busily “offered” Jesus and the blessings of the atonement to all and sundry. The Bible didn’t teach that, but always made qualifications as to those for whom the Gospel message was effectual. The older Baptists always made the distinction between natural and spiritual duties—the natural man was responsible (that is, had a duty) to obey the Law, to honor his parents and honor God only. This natural sinner possessed neither duty nor ability within the realms of the spiritual and was not, by the older order of Baptists, ever exhorted to immediate repentance or faith. These men preached the Gospel freely, but always in its proper order. The first duty of the sinner is to bow to God as his Creator, Law-giver and Judge. It is the duty of quickened sinners to “obey the Gospel.” But with the advent of “Fullerism” it was taught that a spiritually dead man had a God-imposed “duty” to make himself alive and come to God and believe in Jesus and “obey the Gospel” and “get saved.” On the contrary, the sinner is spiritually dead to God and a dead man needs a spiritual resurrection before he can even entertain the idea of coming to the Lord.

Neither can a dead sinner open his own heart to spiritual truth. God opens the heart; Christ opens the understanding; God gives the sinner a new will and gives the sinner the power or authority to “become a son of God” (Read Acts 16:14; Luke 24:45; Psalm 110:3; John 1:11-13).

As alluded to earlier, the spiritually dead, unawakened sinner cannot accept a mere offer or proposition and become a new creature as a result of the effort put forth. Life comes first from God—“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). “She that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth” (1 Timothy 5:6)—alive to the world and its pleasures, she is most certainly, but totally dead unto God, and spiritual acts towards God are not within her compass. Here is a question for some of you easy-believe, free-offer, Fullerite preachers: How are you going to offer or invite such a spiritually dead person to come and receive life? GOD QUICKENS and then the sinner comes—how clear it is! A sinner cannot regenerate himself, any more than a dead corpse can raise himself back to life. As he is not capable of such, but is a “natural man” who “receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:14), neither is he responsible to do so. But, get this statement, also falling from the pen of the Apostle Paul: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). There you have it! FIRST God makes a man a new creature in Christ Jesus, and then repentance and faith and all the graces of the Spirit will come to be manifested in that poor sinner’s life!

Every natural sinner is responsible in the realm of Law wherein he finds himself, and God deals with him first on the basis of his relationship to his Creator and Law-Giver. But a sinner cannot perform any law-work or any spiritual work to recommend himself to God or to get to God. He is shut up under the Law as a Schoolmaster to force him to Christ (Galatians 3:24). And his deliverance in Christ is only known when it pleases God to give it.

Helpless, alien, dead, blind, subject of original sin, bound by Satan—the sinner cannot effect or merit his own deliverance. This deliverance of the Hell-bound sinner, facing his own death and eternal condemnation, surely is only bestowed by God’s abounding grace to that sinner. Think on these things. We feel that the distinction made here is vitally important to any true Gospel ministry or evangelism.

Excellent tract, and Faithful to Scripture indeed, Brother !

"No natural sinner can savingly repent and believe" 1 Cor 2:14.

Unless and until a person is born again of the Spirit, he / she is being alive only to the world and its pleasures.
Yes, even the most ardent of sinners is prevented from performing any action that pleases God.

Rom. 8:7-8

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

"No natural sinner can savingly repent and believe" 1 Cor 2:14.
What 1 Cor 2:14 really says, before the demons of Satan perverted it.

"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Cor 2:14

The "natural man" has no access to the things of the Spirit of God, because the natural man does not have the Spirit of God dwelling in him. So, the Bible tells us how the natural man (dead in Adam; separated from the Spirit) comes to receive the Spirit.

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." - Rom 1:16-17

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." - Rom 10:17

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live." - John 5:24-25

And, in what order does this happen according to God's word...

"In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise" Eph 1:12-13

First you HEAR the gospel, then you BELIEVE the gospel, then you RECEIVE the Holy Spirit.

John Calvin, and his band of perverts, claim the reverse, because they are children of the liar - Satan.

Romans Rom 8:7-8 is dealing with those who serve the Law, who cannot please God through the Law, for only those who walk by faith can please Him.

"Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God."

Those who serve the Law are walking according to the flesh, because the Law is not of faith. This is the context, you godless, hell-bound, perverts.

Nope. You are all those things because you have never known the Truth. But, like your father, the devil, you will continue to lie to yourself, and to others. It's what you do. It's your nature to lie.

Universal Atonement Doctrine Dishonors God
John Gill

The first set of arguments shall be taken from hence, that universal redemption reflects highly on the perfections of God; and what is contrary to the divine perfections, cannot be true; for God cannot deny himself, nor do anything contrary to his nature and attributes.
1. The universal scheme greatly reflects on the love of God to men: it may, at first sights, seem to magnify it, since it extends it to all; but it will not appear so; it lessens it, and reduces it to nothing. The scriptures highly commend the love of God, as displayed in the death of his Son, and in redemption by him; but what kind of love must that be, which does not secure the salvation of any by it? It is not that love which God bears to his own people, which is special and distinguishing; when, according to the universal scheme, God loved Peter no more than he did Judas; nor is it that love of God, which is immutable, invariable, and unalterable; since, according to this scheme, God loves men with so intense a love, at one time, as to give his Son to die for them, and wills that they all should be saved; and afterwards this love is turned into wrath and fury; and he is determined to punish them with everlasting destruction. What sort of love must this be in God, not to spare his Son, but deliver him up to death for all the individuals of mankind, for their redemption; and yet, to multitudes of them, does not send then so much as the gospel, to acquaint them with the blessings of redemption to them; nor give them faith to lay hold upon it for themselves? Such
love as this is unworthy of God, and of no service to the creature.
2. The universal scheme, highly reflects on the wisdom of God: it is certain, God is "wonderful in counsel" in contriving the scheme of redemption; and is "excellent in working", in the execution of it; he the wise God, and our Saviour; and is wise as such. But where is his wisdom in forming a scheme, in which he fails of his end? There must be some deficiency in it; a want of wisdom, to concert a scheme, which is not, or cannot be carried into execution, at least as to some considerable part of it. Should it be said, that the failure is owing to some men's not performing the conditions of their redemption required of them; it may be observed, either God did know, or did not know, this ascribes want of knowledge to him; which surely ought not to be ascribed to him that knows all things: if he did know they would not perform them, where is his wisdom, to provide the blessing of redemption, which he knew beforehand, would be of no service to them? Let not such a charge of folly, be brought against infinite Wisdom.
3. The universal scheme, highly reflects on the justice of God: God is righteous in all his ways and works; and so in this of redemption by Christ; and indeed, one principal end of it is, "To declare the righteousness of God, that he might be just," (or appears to be just) "... and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." (Romans 3:26) But if Christ died for the sins of all men, and the punishment of their sins is inflicted on him, and bore by him, and yet multitudes of them are everlastingly punished for them, where is the justice of God? It is reckoned unjust with men, to punish twice for the same act of offense: if one man pays another man's debts, would it be just with the creditor to exact, require, and receive payment again at the hands of the debtor? If Christ has paid the debts of all men, can it be just with God to arrest such persons, and cast them into the prison of hell, till they have paid the uttermost farthing? Far be it from the Judge of all the earth to do so, who will do right?
4. The universal scheme, reflects on the power of God; as if he was not able to carry his designs into execution; whereas, "The Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save"; but, according to this scheme, it seems as if it was; for if Christ has redeemed all men, and all men are not saved, it must be either from want of will in God to save them, or from want of power: not from want of will; for, according to this scheme, it is the will of God that every individual man should be saved; it must be therefore for want of power; and so he is not omnipotent. Should it be said, that some men not being saved, is owing to evil dispositions in them, obstructing the kind influences and intentions of God towards them; to the perverseness of their wills, and the strength of their unbelief. But, what is man mightier than his Maker? Are the kind influences of God, and his gracious intentions, to be obstructed by the corrupt dispositions of men? Is not He able to work in them, both to will and to do, of His good pleasure? Cannot he remove the perverseness of their wills, and the hardness of their hearts? Cannot he, by his power, take away their unbelief, and work faith in them, to believe in a living Redeemer? Far be it to think otherwise of him, with whom nothing is too hard, nor anything impossible.
5. The universal scheme reflects on the immutability of God, of his love, and of his counsel; God, in the scripture, says "I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed", (Malachi 3:6). But, according to this scheme, it should be, rather, I am the Lord, I change; and therefore the sons of men, or at least some of them, are consumed, are lost and perish, though redeemed by Christ; for the love of God, as has been observed, is changeable with respect into them: one while he loves them, so that he wills their salvation; at another time his love is changed into hatred, and he is resolved to stir up his wrath to the uttermost against them. He is said to be "in one mind, and who can turn him?" (Job 23:13) and yet, according to this scheme, he is sometimes in one mind, and sometimes in another; sometimes his mind is to save them; and at another time his mind is to damn them. But let not this be said of him, "with whom there is no variableness, nor shadow of turning." (James 1:17)
6. The universal scheme disappoints God of his chief end, and robs him of his glory. The ultimate end of God, in the redemption of men, as has been observed, is his own glory; the glory of his rich grace and mercy; and of his righteousness, truth, and faithfulness: but if men, any of them who are redeemed, are not saved, so far God loses his end, and is deprived of his glory; for should this be the case, where would be the glory of God the Father, in forming a scheme which does not succeed, at least with respect to multitudes? And where would be the glory of the Son of God, the Redeemer, in working out the redemption of men, and yet they not be saved by him? And where would be the glory of the Spirit of God, if the redemption wrought out, is not effectually applied by him? But, on the contrary, the "glory of God," Father, Son, and Spirit' "is great in the salvation" of all the re deemed ones, (Psalm 21:5).

Yes
Let's discuss the points made.
Again, Gill, Calvin and you, base your error on the false premise that men are saved by the death of Jesus. That is a lie. No one is saved by His death. Propitiation is universal, salvation is not. You don't comprehend the simplicity of this, because you are brainwashed by a cult that repeatedly takes verses out of context to construct a false narrative. Calvin falsely assumed that if Jesus died for all men on the face of the earth, then logically all men would be saved, so he determined that He could not have died for all men, and manufactured his "limited atonement" heresy. And since His sacrifice was "limited", then logically He must have predestined and chosen who is saved and who is not, making His grace irresistible to the elect. But, again, Calvin had to rape God's word to concoct his false gospel, and claim that men are saved by His death.
