An intensive care unit doctor in Houston Texas who has treated coronavirus patients for more than 250 consecutive days is going viral for a simple act of compassion.

Dr. Joseph Varon, chief of staff at United Memorial Medical Center, was captured embracing a man with COVID-19 while working in the ICU on Thanksgiving Day.

Dressed in full personal protective equipment (PEE), the photo, taken by a photographer hugging the man, whose face is hidden from the camera, his head nestled in the crook of Varon’s arm. One of the patient’s arms is seemingly wrapped around Varon, hugging him back.

"He was very sad because he's in a room where he knows nobody."

An Illinois couple who canceled their original wedding plans amid the pandemic donated their catering deposit to help provide meals for those in need this Thanksgiving.

Emily Bugg, 33, and Billy Lewis, 34, used their $5,000 nonrefundable deposit to purchase 200 Thanksgiving dinners for clients of Thresholds, a nonprofit mental health provider dedicated to helping people with serious mental illnesses and substance use conditions.

"In the grand scheme of things, canceling a big wedding isn't the worst thing that could happen," Bugg, an outreach worker at Thresholds said, we're happy to be married, and we're so happy that we could help Thresholds' clients feel the connection of a Thanksgiving meal as a result of the wedding cancellation."

Bugg and Lewis were married Oct. 1st at City Hall in Chicago.

If we can make an effort to shift the focus away from ourselves and our circumstances, we often find more joy. Why does this happen? It happens because when we focus on others, our problems, needs and wants stop taking center stage in our life. We realize that we are not alone in our trials. We start to see the needs of others and recognize the bigger picture.

Looking beyond yourself is why it’s important to not be isolated. The more people we talk to and get to know, the more stories we learn. I know people who are so isolated from others that the issues of their world become all-consuming. On the other hand, the people I know who spend time listening to others, getting involved in the lives of those around them and using their time to help people are happier.

There are many ways to look beyond yourself. Getting to know others, making an effort to show interest and be involved in your community, educating yourself about an issue you are passionate about and exploring how you can make a difference. All of these things will help take the focus away from yourself.

A teen in Wisconsin knew just what to do when she won a free car, immediately handing over the keys to a friend and Chick-fil-A colleague who had been biking almost 7 miles to the restaurant each way.

Winters are chilly in the Green Bay State, and Hokule’a Taniguchi’s bicycle was her only mode of transportation to the chicken chain.

The 19-year-old had been peddling from her Neenah home to the Appleton restaurant — about a 7-mile bike ride each way.

"I was biking here every morning, so it was a little rough," Taniguchi explained. "Because I’m from Hawaii, I was like, ‘It’s kinda cold!’"

Random Acts Of Kindness

Johann Hari in his books and You tube Videos talks a lot about how addiction, depression and anxiety are often the result of people not being able to connect with each other and feelings of isolation.

An act of kindness no matter how small creates a moment of connection, another human has felt that someone cares about them and in that brief moment their world has changed. In that moment they don’t feel isolated, they feel that there is another human that has taken the time to brighten their day.

It’s not just the recipient who feels this, a RAOK offers the perpetrator that moment of connection too, producing chemicals that not only feel good but offer the chance of a longer happier life. It begs the question, why do we often find it so difficult to perform a RAOK, and why are we not promoting them as a health benefit?

Kindness is a trait many people consider key to being a “good person,” but it can be taken for granted. The importance of being kind often becomes clearer when we experience kindness from another person.

Being treated with kindness can improve a person’s mood. In addition, treating others with kindness may increase happiness and self-esteem in the person doing the action. This may even start a chain reaction of kindness among a group!

The following quotes highlight the impact kindness and compassion may have. While the idea of kindness may seem trite to some, its effects when in action can be quite powerful. Spread some kindness and positivity by sharing one of these quotes with your friends on Facebook and Twitter. Or keep one as a reminder to yourself to practice kindness daily.

Ah, kindness. What a simple way to tell another struggling soul that there is love to be found in the world. -A. A. Malee

Kind words, kind looks, kind acts, and warm handshakes-these are means of grace when men in trouble are fighting unseen battles. -John Hall

“Each smallest act of kindness, reverberates across great distances and spans of time - affecting lives unknown to the one whose generous spirit, was the source of this good echo. Because kindness is passed on and grows each time it’s passed until a simple courtesy becomes an act of selfless courage, years later, and far away. Likewise, each small meanness, each expression of hatred, each act of evil.” -Dean Koontz

Kindness is more than being nice.

Kindness goes beyond merely being nice. Think about it - would you prefer people to describe you to be "kind" or "nice?" There can be a lack of sincerity in just being nice; there is often a perception of doing the minimum. Whereas, being kind is doing intentional, voluntary acts of kindness. Not only when it’s easy to be kind, but when it’s hard to be.

Kindness is a movement.

Has someone ever done something kind to you and all you wanted to do after was pay it forward? That’s because kindness is a chain reaction. It’s a wave that keeps rolling, and all it needs is one person to start it. One small kind act can cause a ripple effect that impacts an entire community. If we are all focused on being kind, we are creating a movement of change.

You know that famous "be the change you wish the see in the world" quote? That quote isn't just about change, and it isn't only about one person being able to change their world. It's bigger; it about a movement that can be started from one person acting with intention.

The Paradoxical Commandments -Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.
