2016 was a total fluke. Hellary won the popular vote (which was expected) but she lost the electoral vote (which was not anticipated). It turned out that black voters in several key states couldn't be bothered to get out and vote for her because she called out Sister Souljah and blathered about super-predators back in the '90s, which turned them off. Dems took blacks for granted and didn't think that their own main constituency would stab Hellary in the back, but they did.
