A fire that is not quenched is a fire that has not been put out. The verse doesn't say that it is an everlasting fire.
The scripture does say the fire is eternal.
Jude 1:7
In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of
eternal fire.
I would say that the corpse eating worms and the corpse burning fire are two different illustrations of the same principle. In neither of these are the dead bodies conscious.
Are these dead people conscious?
Luke 9:60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
