The press doesn't treat Trump with anything near the deference it gave to Obama, up to and including their not reporting high crimes and misdemeanors on Obama's watch.

His explanation is that it's about newsworthiness and they're reserving the right to report on it in the future if he does anything more. He agrees that they talked about it in a clumsy way that made it seem like blackmail.

Newsworthiness is a part of it. He accidentally became a public figure by getting his antisemitic drek in front of Trump. CNN would have been within their rights, ethically, to declare his identity a newsworthy, reportable fact. They chose not to do that, in exchange for an earnest repentance. As they should.
It's all they have.

No, they didn't have to. Protect his name if they want to, but don't use it as leverage. I think that puts CNN in an awkward position, especially since they are the target of the original video. They have to be careful to not look like they are taking revenge on someone who attacked them.
He became a public figure because somehow Trump came across his CNN thing. The antisemitism was found after the fact.
How do you know it's earnest repentance? If CNN says they'll release his name if he posts anything more then it could be fear of reprisal more than earnest repentance. And how newsworthy is it really? He's a Reddit user. I think this author pretty much gets it right.

CNN in largely in the business of holding public figures accountable.
People who are menaced by the truth of their abhorrent behavior coming out probably should be. I would bet that he's quite relieved about the deal he got from CNN. People spread hate thinking that they're anonymous, but once in a while their mask slips, and I think that's too the good. These communities are mushrooms, for right now, and I think it's worth it not letting them bloom into the light.
That's the risk you run being horrible online.
What I mean by earnest repentance is that he doesn't do it again.
