What a person believes about God will determine their doctrine and even their way of life.
Example: The Muslims believe that Allah is a waring God, so, they are always in conflict with others.
Calvinist believe that God does what he wants because he is sovereign. This means that he can throw people into hell for no reason and still be just.
Catholics believe that God is like a taskmaster. If you fail he will crack you on your back with his whip. Catholicim is the religion of you must, you must, you must and if you don't, you will be anathema.
The Bible knows nothing of these kinds of Gods. I have taken the following from The King James Dictionary on line.
THE GOODNESS OF GOD
"A perfection of his character which he excercises towards his creatures according to their various circumstances and relations (Psalm 145:8, 9. Psalm 103:8. 1 John 4:8). Viewed generally, it is benevolence; as excercised with the respect to the miseries of his creatures, it is mercy, pity, compassion and in the case of impenitent sinners, long suffering patience; as excercised communicating favor on the unworthy, It is grace, goodness and justice are the several aspects of one unchageable, infinitely, wise and sovereign moral perfection. God is not sometimes merciful and sometimes just, but he is eternally just and merciful. God is infinitly and unchangeably good, (Zephaniah 3:17) and his goodness is incomprehensible the finite mind, (Romans 11:35, 36). God's goodness appears in two things, giving and forgiving".
The Gospel reveals the nature and character of God. In the Gospel God does not punish the wrong doers or the ones that have sinned against him, instead he sends His only begotten Son into the world as a sacrifice for their sins. We read in John 3:16 that God so loves the world that he gives his only begotten Son. God has done all that he can do for the salvation of fallen man. Humanity has been reconciled unto God by the doing and the dying of Jesus, 2 Corinthians 5:18,19. The ball is now in humanities court. It is now up to humanity to accept God's free offer of reconciliation or to reject it. Either way, God remains just.
THE JUSTICE OF GOD "Tell ye and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no GOD else beside me; a just God and savior; there is none else beside me" Isaiah 45:21.
THE MERCY OF GOD, "(For the Lord thy God is a merciful God) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them" Deuteronomy 4:31.
THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD, "Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference" Romans 3:22.
It is because God is just, merciful and righteous that we can trust him. How can anyone possibly trust in a God that condemns people to hell for no reason other than they were born after Adam? The God of the Bible is JUST, MERCIFUL and RIGHTEOUS in all that he does.
