regardless, the system has given us two viable options

now, you can be a big boy, hide your disappointment and vote strategically to keep hillary out of office
or, you can go sulk in your corner, suck your thumb and continue whining about how rotten the choices are

But I don't want either of them in office. Voting to exclude one or advance the other wouldn't be rational, wouldn't give me a preferable outcome.
So there's the fly in the strategic ointment right there.

I believe it's a civic duty to participate in the process, that our vote should reflect our best judgment and principles. I believe that sometimes you have to say no, even if saying no won't change the outcome. There's a necessary compromise and then there's capitulation. The former may reflect maturity, but the latter almost never does.
Often there's an argument to tempt us, enough of a margin to move us into the uncomfortable "could have been worse" mode of thinking. I've been guilty of falling for that myself, but this election is a palate cleanser on the point, with two disreputable con artists vying for public support in assuming the most important public office on the planet. If the result wasn't that one of them will actually win I'd be grateful for the clarity they've inadvertently provided.

I'd say not lowering my response to his level, recognizing my own mistaken embrace of the wrong standard prior, and explaining my principle managed that.
That said, I'm considering having a t-shirt made.
