Well, that's the UK in pretty much total lockdown after latest measures. No going out except to buy essentials, shops closing that don't sell them, police given power to take action against non compliance, any group gatherings including small will be dispersed and fines meted out. Fun times...

If you don't do a full lockdown now and keep it on place, I reckon you will suffer much worse than Italy in a few weeks time.
This is not about petty brinkmanship, it's about slowing this dreadful sickness.

Your economy is stuffed either way.
if you don't enforce a lockdown very early on then you hit a massive infection rate with a high death %, and then your economy will be trashed anyway. We are going through that now.
Your politics can't help you now, just humane community.

ideally, we would finesse any lockdown to achieve an infection rate that is manageable with the resources we have available. That might mean limited lockdowns in particularly hard hit areas - NYC, for example. No reason to think it would be necessary or effective in the area of NYS that I live in, with some of the lowest population densities in the state.
