Two Judges Down, Seven to Go

Friday July 8th, 2005. This is show # 135.

BEST QUOTE OF THE SHOW:
Bob Enyart: Bush is mad at us [pro-lifers] and, in a way, he's got a point because we are being inconsistent. Because why didn't we speak out against Priscilla Owen? Why didn't we speak out against James Pryor? James Pryor was involved in the 10 commandments being kicked out of the Alabama Supreme Court. And here's James Dobson on 2 sides of almost every issue. He's just so angry, appropriately so, that Judge Roy Moore is kicked out of Alabama and then he's fighting to change some minor procedural rule in the Senate so that William Pryor can be confirmed - William Pryor who voted to kill Terri Schaivo.

Jo Scott: It doesn't make any sense.

Good questions, and I'll add another: Why didn't you speak out against George W.Bush for signing the 1999 legislation, as governor of Texas, which allows hospitals there to pull the plug on patients, even over the objection of the family? Wanda Hudson was trying to fight this on behalf of her little son, now deceased, during the same time that we were all debating the Terri Schiavo case, but it aroused very little interest in the anti-abortion community. We certainly didn't see Bush fly to the scene to grandstand on the Hudson child's behalf, or vigils in front of the hospital, or conservative talk show hosts pleading his case in the court of public opinion. We didn't see condemnation of the Texas legislature for "voting to kill Sun Hudson", or of Bush for signing the death of Sun Hudson into law. Some have alleged that the indifference was due to the fact that this little child was Black and his family was on Medicaid made his life less precious than Terri's in the eyes of some. I would hate to think that was true. Still, it is another inconsistency, to add to Jefferson's and Bob's list.
