No.

1. It artificially overvalues some labor forcing inefficiency.

2. It takes jobs away from those trying to enter the workforce due to scarcity of jobs. Budgeted salaries are divided by fewer employees.

3. It takes away the incentive for some laborers to move up the ladder (again making initial entry more difficult.) If you can get by on less effort for more money, why move up?

No. Wages should be based on the quality of work produced and the skill level, not Big Brother looking over the company's shoulder setting a minimum wage.

Yes. The government should be mandated to pay all its workers the same minimum wage, from the POTUS to the guy who sweeps up at the Lincoln Memorial.

Private businesses should be allowed to pay whatever they wish.

but the individual states should set the amount.

Your statements are in contention with each other. You say "yes" indicating there is an amount that should be set that is the right thing to do. And then you say some states can disobey what you say is right.

I look forward to your answer. :)

Black unemployment rises when the minimum wage rises. What, you think the Teamsters and AFL-CIO had the intrest of low income workers at heart when they lobby to get it raised?

No, I'm saying the cost of living varies from state to state.

Yes.

While setting a minimum wage goes against free markets and distorts markets it is a necessity to prevent rampant abuse of workers resulting in extreme poverty (not having enough money to maintain the essentials of food and shelter). The reason is that many people who will be taking these wages have the least leverage to obtain wages which meet their minimum needs from their employer, however they will be forced to take the job as it is better than no money to meet their needs.

The amount should be just over that needed to obtain a persons minimum needs, which as Persephone has mentioned can vary with different locations (which is fair since those who receive more don't end up ahead because they have to spend more, thus all will end up with similar near non-existent disposable incomes)

Yes and it should be decided on a local basis since the cost of living is different from area to area...........

It kind of, you know, already is like this :plain: . The bare minimum wage is just a starting point and if you take it away, then corporations like Wal-mart and McDonald's will lower the pay despite the fact many of the stores already make full time workers sign papers waving full time status so they don't have to provide health care for them. Of course, it's all for the best, money and the people who horde.. errr make it know best.
