Theology Thursday: Colossians Overview

This is the show from Thursday, October 25th, 2012.

SUMMARY:

* Why is there a Scroll Nailed to the Cross?
In this Bible Study, Bob Enyart goes through Paul's Epistle to the Colossians verse by verse, showing how this Scripture book brings Christians to consider Christ's role in the Godhead, and the very nature of the Trinity. Learn also about God's delegation of authority as indicated by His creation of thrones and dominions, powers, principalities, and authorities. And Paul wrote that God nailed the law to the cross of Christ. Wow! Hear also Paul describe the rules and regulations invented by churches as "self-imposed religion" having "no value against the indulgence of the flesh."

Every story has a plot, and a story's details can be confusing unless you understand its overview. Grasping the big picture will help you reconcile many seemingly contradictory, and controversial Bible passages. Achieve a fuller understanding of God's plan from Genesis to Revelation and equip yourself to share God's Word with friends and family. Consider listening to The Plot series based on Bob's life's work, the book of the same title.

FYI:

In the early part of Paul's Acts ministry, Gentile believers were given handwriting of ordinances to follow.

Acts 15:19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

Acts 15:20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

Acts 15:21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

Acts 15:22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:

Acts 15:23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:

1 Corinthians 11:2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

But, by the end of Acts, there was no more need to keep the ordinances.

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Colossians 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Colossians 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

Colossians 2:21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;

Colossians 2:22 Which all are to perish with the using; ) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

Now, the question is "why?"

What changed?

We need to study the "we" and "ye" of Ephesians of 1-2.

Was Paul's revelation a drawn out thing or an all-at-once thing on the road?

Great question, Striper!

Acts 26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;

Paul was SENT more than once during Acts, and the last time he was sent he was equipped with the full revelation of the mystery.

So what do you think changed?

So what do you think changed?

For one thing, the Gentiles during Paul's Acts ministry kept certain ordinances for the sake of not offending the remnant of Jews that Paul was trying to reach.

After the remnant was gathered (end of Acts), there was no more need for them to keep these ordinances.

You can see the change as you survey Acts, and compare the first six letters Paul wrote with the last seven he wrote from prison.

Excellent post! Recognizing the we and the ye is to see the fellowship of the mystery.

Ephesians 3:9 KJV And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

Unfortunately, even some right dividers put the wall of partition between Jew and Gentile, but as you well know, it doesn't work. Paul was already sent to the Jew first and also to the Greek during the Acts period. That sending left these Gentiles out...

Ephesians 2:11-12 KJV Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
