"And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars" - Revelation 12:1
God presented to His prophet John the church under these symbols. The bible is its own interpreter. Following this rule, we see that God has in His word used a corrupt woman to represent an apostate and corrupt church, see Eze. 23:2-4; Rev. 17:3-6,15,18. Following the same reasoning, a pure woman, as in this instance, would represent the true church.
The sun here represents the light and glory of the gospel dispensation while the moon represents the Mosaic dispensation. As the moon reflects light derived from the sun, so the previous dispensation reflected the light of the present one hence it is under the woman's feet. The Old Testament was the type and shadow while the antitype and substance is the New Testament. The crown of twelve stars would represent the twelve apostles.
