“And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.” Revelation 6:3, 4
In the previous verse, the rider sat upon a white horse. The white color represented the purity of the gospel during the period of the apostolic church. A deterioration has here so developed as to necessitate a change in the color with which Inspiration represents His church. The mystery of iniquity was already at work in Paul's day, see 2Thess 2:7. During the period of the red horseman, worldliness and errors came into the church. The church sought to ally herself with the civil power. This was clearly seen during the time of Emperor Constantine, a nominal convert. Constantine made laws for the church, and suppressed some errors while introducing many others. There arose controversies at this time. When a new emperor ascended the throne, the clergymen rushed to get him to side with their peculiar tenets. There was continual war and trouble. This state of things is fitly described in the language of the prophet John that power was given to him that sat on the horse "to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword."
