The 'Interstellar' challenge

One of the key scenes from the movie Interstellar was when Matthew McConaughey's, Anne Hathaway's and Wes Bentley's characters landed on a planet that was near a black hole, while David Gyasi's character stayed on an orbiting space ship.

The plot point was that on the planet, gravity from the black hole would affect time according to Einstein's theory of relativity, causing those on the planet to de-sync with those on the spaceship.

With the landing party spending a few hours on the surface, more than 20 years passed aboard the spaceship.

The Interstellar challenge is: How many times did the planet rotate over the duration of the voyage of the landing party?​

His time spent on the ship was equivalent to 20 Earth years, not 20 Nibiru (or whatever) years; not even 1 Nibiru day.


If he was watching the other two (three?) shmucks land on the planet, he'd see them slowing down as they approached it, and moving slow as heck while they walked around on the planet. That giant wave coming toward them, he would have seen it slowly moving toward them for like 10 years.

Most people who don't like relativity just assume they are not clever enough to fully understand. Tripe, though, assumes that if he doesn't like the theory then Einstein wasn't clever enough. Ho hum.
