The reformers thought that the articles of the Gospel and justification by faith were so profound that anything that opposed them was anti-Christ. I believe that they were correct. The Gospel is historical because it is based upon a past historical event, also known as the "Christ Event".
The Gospel is the means by which God has reconciled us and the world unto himself.
"And all things are of God who has reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ and has given unto us the ministry of reconciliation" (which is the Gospel)
"To wit, that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and has committed unto us the word of reconciliation" (which is the Gospel) 2 Corinthians 5:18, 19.
The "Historical Gospel" is the means by which God uses to bring people into his kingdom. The preaching of the Gospel to the lost world is the number one priority of the church. What is the "Historical Gospel?" The historical Gospel is that work that Jesus Christ has done in our name and on our behalf. In our name and on our behalf, he fulfilled every jot and tittle of God's holy law, Matthew 5:18. In our name and on our behalf he atoned for our sins and the sins of the whole world, 1 John 2:2. Because of the doing and the dying of Jesus all who believe in Jesus and his Gospel are justified, plus nothing, Romans 5:1. God now sees them as perfect and complete in Christ, Colossians 2:10.
Satan's diversion away from the Gospel of Jesus Christ is religion. The Gospel of Calvinism is that you have been predestinated. This is a false Gospel or another Gospel and is anti-Christ. The Gospel of Catholicism is that you can become pleasing to God by being born again, again, this is a false Gospel and is anti-Christ. The "Historical Gospel" of Jesus Christ reveals that religion, whether it be the Calvinist religion or whatever religion is anti Christ. All religions are anti-Christ.
It is the purpose of religion to lead you away from Christ and his Gospel and to lead you into yourself, who is a sinner. When you allow yourself to become deceived by the devil, he is very happy. Satan knows that in the judgment only those that are found to be "In Christ" will survive. To be in Christ means that you have embraced Christ and his Gospel as your only means of salvation, plus nothing. It is not going to be the Gospel plus some sort of a religion that will save you. It is going to be the Gospel plus nothing.
