The Coronavirus -- Who is most at risk?

Do you know anyone who:

-- is over 70 years of age
-- is obese
-- has diabetes
-- has high blood pressure
-- has asthma
-- has heart disease
-- has chronic respiratory disease
-- has cancer
-- smokes/vapes
-- is for any reason immunodeficient

If you or anyone you know fits into any one or more of these categories, you and/or they are particularly at risk from this virus.

As if that weren't bad enough, even a few young and fit people are suddenly finding themselves in hospitals and on ventilators because of this virus.

More than 99% of Italy’s coronavirus fatalities were people who suffered from previous medical conditions, according to a study by the country’s national health authority.

More than 75% had high blood pressure, about 35% had diabetes and a third suffered from heart disease.

The average age of those who’ve died from the virus in Italy is 79.5. As of March 17, 17 people under 50 had died from the disease. All of Italy’s victims under 40 have been males with serious existing medical conditions.

That being said there are reasons why the COVIR-19 death toll in Italy, which has one of the best medical systems in the world, exceeds that of China!

The majority of people who become infected with coronavirus are not expected to become seriously ill, but a large segment of the U.S. adult population – 41 percent of adults ages 18 and older – have a higher risk of serious illness if they do become infected due to their age or underlying medical condition.

Most of those at higher risk of developing a serious illness are older (72.4% or 76.3 million adults); however, the remaining 29.2 million adults ages 18-59 are at risk due to an underlying medical condition.

Autoimmune Disease And COVID-19: Are You At High Risk?

The health services of Ireland added several more underlying conditions to the list. These include HIV patients, persons who have had a bone marrow or organ transplant, asthmatics, and those being treated for cancer or any of the autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Addison's disease, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, pernicious anemia, and psoriasis, increase the risk of developing serious to deadly complications from coronavirus infection. Other autoimmune diseases included in the list are Hashimoto's thyroiditis, autoimmune vasculitis, type 1 diabetes, Graves’ disease, myasthenia gravis, inflammatory bowel disease, and Sjogren's syndrome.
