TEL AVIV— A hunt was launched Friday for a gunman who killed at least two people and injured seven others outside a cafe-bar in downtown Tel Aviv, officials said.
The search was sparked after the assailant opened fire on a group of people outside the venue, Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said officials were investigating whether the incident was terror-related.
Of the seven people wounded, two were in severe condition and five were moderate, according to police. The injured were treated by medical teams and sent to the hospital.

“I hid in a shed near the place of the shooting,” a witness, who gave his name as Osnat, told Israel’s Army Radio. “I heard loud noise of shooting, we were ready that any second the shooter [would] enter where we hid. I’m still shaking.”
The shooting happened on the corner of Dizengoff and Gordon Streets, a vibrant area blocks away from the beach that features a lot of shops, cafes and bars.
Nati Shakked, owner of a nearby bar that was hit by gunfire, said the assailant had waited on a bench outside before taking a machine-gun out of a bag and “shooting in every direction”.
“It was a terrorist attack, without a doubt,” he told Israel’s Channel Two television.
The attack comes amid more than three months of almost daily Palestinian attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers. On the Israeli side, 21 people have died, mostly in stabbings, shootings and car-ramming attacks. At least 131 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, 90 of them identified by Israel as assailants. The rest died in clashes with security forces.
Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai visited the wounded in hospital and later said he spoke with those who were able to talk. He said that inside the bar, “friends were celebrating a birthday and a man opened fire at them from the outside.”
He said “lessons will be learned” to improve security.
Channel 10 reported that an assault rifle was used in Friday’s attack and that about 30 shots were fired. It said that Israeli police and special forces are going house to house in the area, searching for the gunman.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said on Friday: “From what we know until now and as part of the ongoing investigation, there’s a strong possibility that it was in fact a terrorist attack.”
Security camera footage showed the gunman taking a weapon out of his backpack and then shooting at people in the street.
The two victims have been identified as Alon Bakal, 26, who was a manager at the bar targeted, and Shimon Ruimi, 30.

The suspect, a 29-year-old Israeli Arab from northern Israel, had stolen the gun from his father, who works in security, Haaretz newspaper reported.
The father recognised his son from media reports and contacted the police, the newspaper said.
Friday’s shootings follow a wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis over the past few months.
As of 23 December, at least 21 Israelis had been killed in the recent violence, most of them in stabbings and shooting attacks by Palestinians.
At least 131 Palestinians have also been killed.

A previous history and record of violence against police:

http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.694989

A relative of the suspect told Haaretz that this isn't his first violent incident. In recent years his family would occasionally call the police due to his aggression.

"We know he was being treated for mental [issues]," the relative said. "We haven't heard much about him recently. He wasn't married and we always suspected he was unstable."

A decade ago, the suspect's cousin was killed by Border Police officers during a home search. Subsequently, the suspect struggled with depression, according to his family.

In 2007, the suspect attacked a soldier with a screwdriver, lightly wounding him. During his interrogation, he said that he wanted to avenge his cousin's death.

He said he picked a soldier who appeared skinny, which would make it easier for him to snatch his weapon. He was planning to shoot the soldier and then sell the weapon.

He was convicted and served a five-year sentence.

A bit of simple math shows that
if this jerk was convicted in 2008-9, served 5 years in jail,
and was released in 2013-14 or so,
he was out only one year before repeating this same crime again,
namely attempted murder.

Where but in Israel could an arab terrorist and attempted murderer
expect to be treated so mercifully
as to get a mere 5 year sentence,
only to commit the same crime again with better success?

In any Arab country he would have been executed,
and in the USA he hopefully would be doing 25 years, not 5 years,
for his first brutal attempted murder.

Now 2 more people are dead, 2 are critically wounded,
and 5 more seriously wounded.

Justice would have been better served if
he had remained in prison another 25 years.

Treating this Arab terrorist kindly has resulted
in further horror and suffering for innocent citizens.

UPDATE:

While the shooter is still at large, its now strongly suspected that
he had an escape route planned and was obviously assisted in the getaway:

That makes this a planned terrorist act, and not "a depressed man" with "mental issues".

The fact is becoming glaringly apparent that someone had a car waiting
and some kind of transport route and maybe even car-swapping,
and he is probably hiding in a 'safe-house' run by Hamas or another Arab terrorist group,
if he's not already out of the country by now.

- Sidenote:

Strange how Chair is silent on this thread.

His hubris about Israelis being able to protect themselves without any help from outsiders
is ringing tragically hollow at the moment.

This isn't a gloat - the lives this terrorist has ruined is horrific and it was a monstrous act.

Meanwhile Jews in Toronto are wondering if the shooter wasn't assisted by espionage agents,
for political reasons beyond terrorism, and that throws the door open to ANY groups,
including CIA, HAMAS, Iranians, etc.

It turns out that Chair has other things to do in his life besides immediately responding to your regurgitation of the news.

What help are you outsiders offering in this case?

Exposing the fact that its a TERRORIST ATTACK,
not a 'lone mental patient',
as the media and his family are trying to portray.

Perhaps you can explain why his father who provided the UZZI to him
has not been arrested, stripped of his "security" position,
and sentenced to 25 years for treason and terrorism.

A guy who's job is in 'security' lets a convicted murderer have access to a machine-gun?

Ah, nobody here has thought about these questions. Good thing you've brought them up.

Just look at the cop here in 2009 listening to the verdict:

"We are giving him 5 years less a day,
so that we can later arm him and send him out to try it again."

Not only does the cop look unhappy,
but even the terrorist is rolling his eyes thinking, "really?!?"
"I wanted to start a rock band, but now I'm stuck here working for the Mossad
as a patsy. Arabs never get a break."

Naz- what exactly is your point in this thread?

(1) That you need to smarten up and hand out sentences appropriate to the crime.

A guy that stabs a soldier with a screwdriver in order to get his gun and shoot him
is guilty of treason, attempted murder, and grievous assault bodily harm,
and needs to be put in prison for life.

and (2) Your own judges and lawyers are destroying your country from the inside.

Why?

Because judges and lawyers are homosexual traitors.

So you are offering this free advice to the State of Israel? How nice of you.
Do you have statistics on the percentage of Israeli judges and lawyers who are "homosexual traitors"? How many are only homosexual, or only traitors, without being both?

There's no such thing as a non-homosexual lawyer.

You can't be a homosexual without being a traitor to Israel.

You can't be lawyer without giving fellatio to another gay lawyer.

These are self-evident facts of life.

No proof is needed for a tautology.

Suggesting lawyers aren't faggots is like suggesting Muslims aren't pedophile sodomites.

UPDATE:

This murdering terrorist has killed someone else on his way to his hideout:

Police Say Tel Aviv Shooter Likely Killed Third Victim While Fleeing

On fourth day of manhunt, forces are focusing search in north Tel Aviv; ministers call on public to remain calm:

Police said on Monday they have reason to believe that the gunman who killed two and wounded seven in a shooting spree in downtown Tel Aviv on Friday also murdered another man.

A taxi driver found murdered near north Tel Aviv's Mandarin Hotel a short while after the attack seems to have been the third victim of 19-year-old Nashat Melhem, the suspected perpetrator of a shooting. Police were initially unsure if the murder of Amin Shaaban, the cab driver, was linked to the shooting.

Authorities also arrested on Monday a second, initially unidentified family member of Melhem
whose attack on the pub left two Israelis dead and seven others wounded. Juadat Melhem, the brother of Nashat Melhem, was arrested on Friday in connection to the attack.

The manhunt for Melhem continued Monday for a fourth day, with police trying to retrace the his tracks. Suspicious activity was reported in North Tel Aviv on Monday where a local resident approached the guards at a military base and said she had seen an individual run into a large field covered by vegetation.

The soldiers briefly searched the area and found what appeared to be fresh footprints before a large police force, including a helicopter, hounds and mounted officers arrived on the scene to search the area more thoroughly.

Police believe Melhem is still in Tel Aviv, and that he is armed and dangerous, however they haven't yet ruled out the possibility that he may have left the area in a getaway prepared in advance. Police also said that they can not rule out the possibility that Melhen would stike again. Police and Shin Bet investigators said Sunday Melhem wasn't planning to return alive from the killing spree, and were investigating if he had an accomplice who knew of his plans in advance.

Police were searching for Melhem in the area of a commercial center he used to work in, in the northern Tel Aviv neighborhood of Ramat Aviv. Melhem's former employer told investigators that he used to do deliveries in the neighborhood, and was familiar with its streets and with several residents. Some in the neighborhood expressed concern that Melhem had prepared a hideout in the area in advance.

Authorities have come to their senses and arrested the shooter's relatives.

Two brothers are already implicated in assisting him to acquire the machine-gun,
while the father may be involved in not reporting the missing weapon immediately.

POLICE ARREST FATHER AND FAMILY OF SHOOTER

The father of the Tel Aviv pub shooter and five more family members are arrested; the gunman is still at large.

The father of the gunman who attacked a pub on Tel Aviv’s Dizengoff Street last Friday has been arrested, along with five members of the family, after two of the shooter’s brothers were taken into custody on Saturday.
Muhammad Milhem was the one who identified his son, Nashet Milhem, 31, as the shooter when he saw video footage of the attack on a broadcast last weekend. The elder Milhem is a security guard and auxiliary police officer; it was his weapon the gunman stole and used in the attack.
The younger Milhem shot and killed two people and wounded eight others last Friday, and traumatized many others. Last Saturday police searched the Milhem family home in the northern Israeli Arab town of Ar’ara in Wadi Ara.
Two of the shooter’s brothers were arrested as suspected accessories in the attack. One was taken to a judge at the Haifa Magistrate’s Court the same evening, where his remand was extended by five days.
Tuesday morning, Milhem’s father and five other family members were taken into custody and arrested as well.
“This is police impotency,” family attorney Nachmi Feinblatt was quoted by Israel’s Channel 2 television news as saying. “In the end, they arrested the entire family.”
Nashet Milhem is still at large; he is armed with the submachine gun he used in the attack, and the public is being warned that he is considered dangerous.
Security personnel are focusing most of their search on the northern Tel Aviv suburb of Ramat Aviv. That is where Milhem worked for nearly a decade in a vegetable store, and where he was last reported being seen by residents.

The complaint of the attorney is lame here.

When terrorists believe that their own family is safe and exempt from charges
and punishments regarding collusion, enabling, assistance, accessory before the fact,
failure to report a terrorist activity, they do these things with impunity
and have no reason to surrender themselves.

Instead they imagine to go out in a hail of bullets as some kind of twisted hero.

The only chance of this murdering jerk surrendering is realising that
the consequences extend to his family and friends in regard to his
horrific crimes.
