Prominent Catholic: Y'know, Charlie Hebdo kinda asked for it.

Typical of Bill Donohue, really. Although a little strange that he deploys the tactic to support non-Catholics.

I was making no point about what I posted other than I found it interesting; that, and that the guy is a tactless jerk, but since he's without Christ that is only to be expected.

To be clear, these attacks by religious fruit cakes are completely unacceptable and despicable!!!!.... but I don't see the wisdom in this need to test every conceivable limit of insulting people dressed up in the garments of "free speech"?????

This idea that a cartoonist spends his days devising the most insulting presentations that do not even contain a "truth" meant to shape public policy, convey a meaning, enhance truth, beauty or goodness, is just going to increase hatred, not enlightenment.

Hebdo in effect insisted on martyring themselves for the cause.

Now there's a guy who's desensitized to violence. The way he waltzes through that statement, you'd think he was talking about a comedian who got punched in the face over some dumb joke.

I take less issue with this than I do with Donald Trump's immediate response to the attack He shot out a series of tweets essentially blaming the victim based on France's gun laws. I would agree that Muslims have good reason to be angry by the series of depictions, but "they would have been able to defend themselves if they had guns"? Both are examples of extremely bad timing at best, but the most distasteful part, IMO is Trump again using an atrocity to draw attention to himself.

Trump is definitely the villain we deserve.

Ya know, I used to agree with the sentiment.

When that idiot in Florida (but I repeat myself) burned the Koran, I thought he was a publicity-seeking doofus who was pouring fuel on the fire, so to speak. Now: Is he still a complete grandstanding idiot? Yep. Should any of us necessarily be afraid of torching a book?

No. No, we should not. And I'm caring less and less about how "prudent" or in "poor taste" any given expression really is. If your faith can't withstand mockery, your faith is pretty pathetic.

Indeed, no one gains that amount of wealth being honest, moral and modest. Crap hair, crap person.

I agree with Granite. How someone can think taking a life is an appropriate response to any kind of expression, is beyond me. I don't actually believe they are killing journalists like this because of a depiction of their prophet. These radicals are only using it as an excuse to kill westerners. Evil, oppressed, angry, impoverished zealots taking their terrible lives out on people who are innocent.

I'd say unequivocally good.

I'd say Bill Donohue looks that much sillier. And people shouldn't try to make a larger point against Catholics based on what he says.

how stupid

apparently, in your mind, condemning porn (which Donahue did) is equivalent to killing people over political/religious commentary

Um, no. Not even sure where you got that. My main problem with the man is that he's super sensitive about things people say about Catholicism, and he's will to say things that are far worse about atheists.

you acted like Donahue's "crime" is equivalent to that of the perps here... b/c you condemned him while ignoring the broader issue

where did Donahue say that those people deserved to die for depicting nuns and priests in sexual acts??

nowhere. So why don't you find a more apropos target of your... uh... angst... or whatever the heck it is... your need to hate someone

No, I didn't. I objected to blaming the victim.

Here's the crux of what he said:

Stephane Charbonnier, the paper’s publisher, was killed today in the slaughter. It is too bad that he didn’t understand the role he played in his tragic death.

Stephane Charbonnier didn't play a role in his death. He was senselessly murdered by violent fascistic extremists. This attitude deserves to be condemned by anyone who believes in free speech.
