ECT Pope Francis, the Crusades, and Islam

I had a few questions for the TOL Catholics.

1) Can Pope Francis today call for a new Crusade to "battle" Islam?

2) If "yes" how would he go about it?

3) If "no" does that mean the Crusades were historically linked to the politics and culture of the times? By thsi I mean that the because the cuture and politics of today are very different from the poitics and culure at he time of the various Crusades.

If he called for one, it would divide the RCC into many divisions and pretty much destroy his credibility.

Considering the many former Roman Catholics who are now professing Muslims; he might find himself with a problem in his own backyard :chuckle:
