I really enjoyed listening to Paul Harvey on the radio.

One story he told stuck with me for years.

He told the story of a mother who's favorite son, David, died at a young age.
She was devastated and went into a depression.

James, a brother of David, went into his mother room while she lay in bed. It was dark, but she noticed him.
She called out, "Is that you, David?"

"No", replied James. "It's just me."

Mother buried her face in the pillow and began to sob.

The young James was so distraught over his mother's depression that he started emulating his brother, David.
Tried to speak like him, laugh like him, act like him, and dress like him.

When he did this, it pleased his mother and she would get out of bed and play with him.
This pleased James to see his mother happy, so he continued to act as a child around his mother; the child, David, to make his mother happy.

James ended up writing a famous story of a boy in a land where children never grow up.
Peter Pan, by James M. Barrie.

And that's the rest of the story.

If I were Satan and Christianity really was the one true way to salvation, I'd become a fundamentalist Christian and go around publicly spewing as much ignorance, stupidity, hate, and bigotry as I could, thereby making the faith unattractive and unpopular.

Too late, it's already been done.

Paul Harvey’s “If I Were the Devil Transcript” from 1965

Posted on November 30, 2012 by freshmannatoday

In 1965, Paul Harvey broadcasted “If I Were The Devil.” I am posting the transcript of this on Fresh Manna Today. It is really amazing to realize over 47 years ago how accurately he “prophesied” the future spiritual condition of the United States. Many of his statements were considered ridiculously outlandish at that time in history. Yet, we find ourselves today…

PAUL HARVEY’S ‘IF I WERE THE DEVIL’ TRANSCRIPT
If I were the devil … If I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I’d have a third of it’s real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — Thee. So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first — I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’

“To the young, I would whisper that ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what’s bad is good, and what’s good is ‘square.’ And the old, I would teach to pray, after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’

“And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.

“If I were the devil I’d soon have families that war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions — just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.

“Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography — soon I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbols of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.

“If I were the devil I’d take from those, and who have, and give to those wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. And what do you bet? I could get whole states to promote gambling as thee way to get rich? I would caution against extremes and hard work, in Patriotism, in moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on the TV is the way to be. And thus I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure. In other words, if I were the devil I’d just keep right on doing on what he’s doing. Paul Harvey, good day.”

"Christian values ?" What the heck are those ? Are they denying rights to gay people, demonizing them, spreading all manner of vicious lies about them , and seeking to get our government to persecute them ?
Are they denying poor people help and those who are down on their luck , and then accusing helpless people of being "lazy bums " who want to sponge off the government while it supposedly takes hard-earned money from peopel who ARE willing to work ?
Are they teaching kids to b e intolerant of Non-Christians , especially Muslims ? Are they teaching kids creationism and keeping them ignorant of scientific fact ? Are they teaching kids homophobic bigotry ?
If these are "Christian values ,", I want absolutely nothing to do with them . Today , Satan is the GOP combined with the religious right . They are about as Un-Christian and unlike Jesus as anyone could ever be .

Many of the voices, especially the loud and bigoted ones you hear on the news, aren't a reflection of Christianity and aren't necessarily Christian, even though they might call themselves such. Just because someone claims a religious affiliation doesn't make them an ambassador of that religion. If that were the case then after 9/11 we would have rounded up all Muslims and put them in prison camps. Stupid people make stupid decisions, no matter what religion / race / creed / sex / age they are.

Sure they are. The problem for Christianity is that there is no ecumenical authoritative standard...or rather too many authoritative standards for the religion to bear.

Wow...I hadn't heard that one. Although I certainly loved listening to Paul Harvey. And he sure had the devil figured out.

No, you'd become like Meshak and God's Untruth and preach a false gospel of works. Yep, they're working for the devil.
