[Elon Musk: Humanity ‘Probably’ Living in a Matrix-Style Computer Simulation by Breitbart Tech2] "Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk claimed that there is only a “one in billions” chance we are not living in a Matrix-style computer simulation at Recode’s annual Code Conference this week.

“The strongest argument for us being in a simulation probably is the following: Forty years ago we had Pong. Like two rectangles and a dot. That was what games were,” said Musk.

Now, 40 years later we have photorealistic, 3D simulations with millions of people playing simultaneously, and it’s getting better every year. Soon we’ll have virtual reality, augmented reality.

If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then the games will become indistinguishable from reality, even if that rate of advancement drops by a thousand from what it is now. Then you just say, okay, let’s imagine it’s 10,000 years in the future, which is nothing on the evolutionary scale.

So given that we’re clearly on a trajectory to have games that are indistinguishable from reality, and those games could be played on any set-top box or on a PC or whatever, and there would probably be billions of such computers or set-top boxes, it would seem to follow that the odds we’re in base reality is one in billions.

Tell me what’s wrong with that argument…” asked Musk.

“So is the answer yes?” asked a member of the audience in reference to reality being an artificial simulation.

“The argument is probably… Is there a flaw in that argument?” he replied.

Musk continued to argue that it would be a good thing if we are living in a simulation, claiming that if we weren’t, a calamitous event will wipe out humanity and stop it from advancing.

“Arguably we should hope that that’s true, because otherwise if civilization stops advancing, that may be due to some calamitous event that erases civilization,” he argued. “So maybe we should be hopeful this is a simulation, because otherwise either we are going to create simulations indistinguishable from reality or civilization will cease to exist. Let's recap on what 'The Matrix' is about:

Mankind develops artificial intelligence which eventually learns to replicate. Eventually, the machines turn against us, and in our attemptot beat them, we blot out the sun, which is their primary energy source.
We nevertheless lose anyway, and the machines turn to harvesting human bodies for energy- they put us in a pod, where we undergo a false reality in a simulator so that our bodies will grow naturally.
And then, after the machines have used all the energy they can, they dispose of the body and use it to fortify others.

Human crops, you see.
Doesn't get much more terrifying then that, especially being that it apparently is a possible reality.

However,
it does not do man any good to sit there and wonder, because if such things are the case there is nothing we can do anyway. Also, God is self-evident to man- we have an an entire history of His existence working with us. To put it all to being a 'simulation' is just maddening.

I enjoyed the first movie, but always thought this basic premise seemed pretty dumb. How in the world would you get more energy out of humans than it requires to keep them alive? There's a basic conservation of energy problem there.

Seems like it would have made a lot more sense to say that the machines somehow rely on human complexity to keep from freezing up in binary thinking. They somehow tap the human subconscious for it's fuzzy logic capabilities while plugged into the matrix, with the simulation keeping the human's brains from shutting down through lack of use.

In the end, we are in a sort of simulation that keeps us from seeing reality, though. The blue pill in the western world is made up of the "American Dream", cheap food and gadgets, disconnected charitable giving, political parties and elections, magazines at the checkout counter and a stream of babble vomited out through electronic devices everywhere we turn. We don't really need completely immersive virtual reality to shut down our brains and dull our hearts. Most of our lives are a sort of dim reflection of real life already.

The antidote is the gospel. The red pill is the sermon on the mount, the cross and resurrection, the outpouring of the Spirit and seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven bowls.
