Don't be too worried that you aren't a Christian. Jesus never used the word - nor was Jesus a Christian. In many ways Christianity has stopped being the religion of Jesus and has become instead the religion about Jesus.
Was Jesus the Person He was because He accepted Jesus as His personal lord and savior? Hmmmm.
I will say that you are on the right track - lifting your attention from the forms of religion to the truths of religion.
