Israel, Iran & ISIS: What’s next? Mt 24:6
Violent attacks provoke revenge fantasies, scapegoating and more violence.
We keep missing the lessons of our own Christian tradition by falling into the trap of reactivity and defensiveness that lead to killing others.
Jesus was nonviolent and told Pilate that his "kingdom was not of this world." If it were, as the verse goes on to explain, his followers would revenge the death of their leader and pick up the sword against Rome.
What we should have done after 9/11 was to pursue terrorist organizations as criminal entities and bring them to justice. That was a valid choice at the time but the fearful hawks in government decided to do their own thing.
We got the lesson but we have ignored it.
Anyone who is killed has relatives who mourn the death of one of their own. And--especially in desert tribal societies like we have in the Middle East--revenge and death is part of the equation.
