I used to do a lot of it. Wine, mead, mead ale, and beer.
The easiest way I know of for beer is to get a Coopers kit, (the "dark ale" or "stout") and add about 3 lb's of dry malt to it, and then dry hop it in the carboy. Adding honey is good too. Makes 5 gallons, about 2 cases of awesome beer cheap, in about 3 weeks. 2 weeks if you keg it, or 3 if you bottle.
