The conservatives who want to place an amendment [to the US constitution] (some of them), their amendment will allow for civil unions for homosexuals but not marriage. So if that happened (God forbid that would happen) but if that happened we codify homosexual unions in the law of the land at the highest level and in order to win the battle we've lost the war.
That's an example of the foolishness of Christian conservativism. That certainly could happen. And Christians should not say, "We're against this because it's not our tradition, because the people need to speak." Those are ridiculous arguments. We're against homosexual marriage because we're against homosexuality because it's a sin. It's perverse. It's wrong. It's destructive. The people who give themselves over to homosexual impulses are destroying themselves. They need to be rebuked and to be restigmatized and we need to recriminalize homosexuality.
And if we can't do it, that's one thing. But we Christians don't even know that's what we're supposed to do! We think we're only supposed to respect and love and tolerate.
