ECT Does scripture teach that God is "sovereign"?

Well, the word "sovereign" does not appear in scriptures.

At least in the KJV.

The English word "sovereign", according to my Webster's, means "royal; supreme in power possessing supreme dominion; effectual: n. a king, emperor, or queen.

Is God supreme in power? Of course He is.

There is no greater power than the power of God.

But is there those who choose not to be ruled by God? Yes.

Is God sovereign in their lives? Not for the moment. But they will reap what they sow.

There seems to be a bit of misconception on this subject.

We do not use evil to accomplish good. Romans 12:21 We are to overcome evil with good.

Why? Because that is what God does, I John 1:5;4:8, and we are to imitate God, Ephesians 5:1

When we do, people will see God's words in action, we want people to see that we not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.

They will get to know God by our lifestyles and examples.

But we do not have absolute control, as some people see sovereignity, but we can and do live by God's word and His promises and principles.

The more we live the truth's of God's word, the more other people can learn who God is, (if they want to).

Sovereign does not mean absolute control over every detail in every way. The Webster dictionary is plain.

God is the ruler over all, but not all obey God.

In our country, the Constitution is the law of the land, but not all, including Presidents and judges and others sworn to uphold the Constitution, obey the law of the land.

Is there a better description for God's rulership? or do we simply need to recognize that sovereign does not mean absolute power over all details?

How does scripture describe God's power and authority?

Genesis 1:1 is the logical place to start. God created the heaven and the earth. That is power.

Genesis 2-3

The serpent did not obey God, but scammed Eve into disobeying God, she chose to submit to the serpent ( a figure of speech to teach the craftiness of the Devil) instead of God.

God was not absolute in His power over Eve, nor over Adam, who knowingly disobeyed.

Sovereign does not imply absolute, but it may imply final authority

What else does scripture teach about God's authority?

We do not have absolute control.

God does not have absolute control, that is why people can and do disobey

Since we are to imitate God, Ephesians 5:1, and IF God had absolute control over everyone in every way, we would have to imitate that.

If Bob has absolute control over Sally, and Sally has absolute control over Bob, then neither has absolute control over themselves. Or for that matter, any control over themselves!

Sovereign does not mean absolute control, now does it?

Neither Bob nor Sally would have any control over themselves, it would be impossible for them to choose to do anything of and by themselves.

funny how some threads simply do not leave much room for discussion.
