As to the main question of the OP: I would contend that the catholic church, as an institution is not Christian since they preach a different gospel. One that involves salvation, at least in part, through sacrament. That said, I wholeheartedly believe that some catholics are Christian. And I wholeheartedly believe that some protestants, are not.
