While revenge may certainly be part of the reason, there is a much more pragmatic reason: destroying murderers keeps them from killing again. It's a simple issue of physics. When something ceases to exist, it also ceases to produce direct physical effects.
Studies of recidivism demonstrates that keeping them around for decades does little toward rehabilitation.
