Indeed it does. Let any conservative - white or black or any shade in between - make a blackface joke about any black person (and it was not really a joke, Sulu sincerely meant it), there'd be endless media hell to pay. But Sulu gets a pass because he's a fellow traveler and Thomas is "other." That's Sulu is homosexual is secondary.
